Thief Protagonist?

Post by Grubs »

Hello all! I recently pulled this game out again - maybe I'll finish it this time!

I'm thinking about playing a Thief protagonist, but I'm a bit worried that he'll normally be in conversation, which means he wont' be able to hide. It seems like there are some times when you have to talk to someone, and then combat begins immediately. If my thief is talking to someone, he can't be hidden, which means no backstab.

Anyway, is there any problem with putting a different character (like Keldorn) in front, so everyone talks to him instead? Are there some situations that specifically require the protagonist to be in conversation?

There are times when I have put my other characters in front, especially my tanks. The choices that pop up in the dialogue window sometimes reflect what my PC would say, but sometimes reflect what that character would say. LOL..I remember Minsc accepting a quest "tentatively" on my PC's behalf, but said he would have to ask my character. (He was sure I would want to help though :D ) Another time when it was Jahiera in front....(with the Harper Quests), she carried most of the conversation, with an occasional interjection form me. When I returned to the theater after rescueing Herdelis (sp?), I let Korgan do all of the talking, it was quite funny. I dont think I said anything that time, but I could be mistaken. :p

This is my first time to play BG2, so I do a lot of experimenting :D

I've played as a solo assassin and had no memorable problems with talking to people. Keep in mind that opponents can be blue-circled and you can still backstab them. Their last thought is what nasty thing they're going to say when they see you. :)

The character in front will talk, regrdless if it's the protagonist. Just let your frontliner have a good charisma. Some dialogue needs the protagonist but not that much.

there are solotions to the hiding part in your post. like potions of invisibility or walking around a corner and then hide. getting blasted all the time because of True Sight? try the cloak of non-detection. One of the most useful cloaks of the game if you need to be stealthy

Also keep in mind that quite a few monsters in BG2 cannot be backstabbed.
