Starting.

Post by Nuke »

I just started the game and after reading the forums/infos a bit I need a bit of advice.

1) party size/composition
seems exp is sort of an issue in 6 ppl party so I'm considering 5 (or 4 is you think it's a better idea)
I know I'm gonna need
Annah , Dakkon and F-F-G , myself being a mage ,
perhaps Vhailor or that other mage fella as well

seems to me that Morte is a poor fighter since he can't eqip stuff (yea I know his stats may get a lot better with proper dialogues)
but still he doesn't seem much - his resists are cool but I preffer my fighter wear a plate , shield , weapon of choice and some trinkets charging into battle...not ...teeth , eyeballs and a good joke. :o
Or perhaps there's something more I should know about this fella ?

2) leveling up system
there's a lotta mess with that - I wanna be a mage , but I heard it's good to get l 7 of fighter to get some good stuff and then progress to mage

on the other hand I believe you need to be l 12 mage FIRST to get some cool magi tatoo (+3 int , extra spells ) ...

so what do you advise ?
l7 fight first , then progress to mage ?
l6 of fighter , progress to l12 of mage ?
stay l3 fight , rest mage levels ?

3) starting stats
I've given myself
10strg
10int
18 wis
14 dex
12 con
13 cha

low int because I think I could raise it easily later on with tattoos or something
14 dex seems out of place (I figured there will be some stuff on the way that could help me raise it a bit to gain some real ac/missile bonuses)

should I restart ?

Any help appreciated.
I wanna see what's outside this mortuary nightmare but I wanna do it with some sort of a plan... :o :)

Not at all. There is no experience limit.

I don't recall them doing so, but Morte's taunt ability is among the best secret weapons in the game.

There's no mess about it, at all. The only thing you get at level 7 is the ability to use a special tattoo, which raises the stats relevant to whatever profession reached level 7, first.

I personally prefer having Dak'kon, Annah, Morte and Fall-From-Grace in my party, leaving one slot to give to Nordom, Vhailor or Ignus; but that's up to you. There's truly no "perfect" arrangement for gameplay. If you play to find the "easiest win," you're going to miss out on a lot of fun, IMO.

If you're expecting characters in PS:T to pack steel and wear plate armor, you're in for a surprise. :) It just doesn't work that way.

For what it's worth, you can give Morte new teeth which have a better chance to hit and do more damage. Morte makes a good "tank" early in the game, just because he's better in combat than the Nameless One until you really get things going. Later on, your other party members will be doing most of the fighting, but Morte is still someone you'll want to keep around.

For the first couple of chapters, all you're going to be fighting for a while are thugs (and only when you can't avoid them), so in my opinion, there's not much to worry about. If the Nameless One dies, it's no big deal. When your opponents get tougher and harder to avoid, you'll be able to deal with them because you'll have a lot of experience from other things besides combat. Look at it this way: you can earn a lot more experience by talking to people than you can by killing them.

I like to have a party consisting of: Nameless One, Morte, Dak'kon, Annah, Fall-From-Grace, and Nordom. You can recruit Ignus temporarily and learn everything he can show you about fire, but I wouldn't keep him in the party permanently. Vhailor is useful in a couple of situations, but in my opinion, he's not worth giving up another party member. In my opinion, he's the least effective fighter in the game. What makes him valuable is that he can "kill" someone in one of the dialogues without the party having to get into a fight. You might have seen a dialogue already that gives you the option, "(Reach behind him and snap his neck)," which kills the person you're talking to instantly. (You still get experience for the kill.) The dialogue I'm referring to that involves Vhailor works sort of like that. But like I say, otherwise, he's pretty lame in combat compared to the others (if you play them and equip them the right way).

If you want to restart, it's no big deal. It takes a little while to get into the swing of things. PS:T is no ordinary game. If you do decide to restart, I suggest that you give the Nameless One the following stats:

STR 10 (don't worry about raising it anytime soon)
DEX 13 (more is helpful, but other stats take precedence)
CON 10 (don't worry about raising it anytime soon)
INT 13 (raise it when you need it and use tattoos)
WIS 18 (talk to O as soon as you can and get a tattoo))
CHA 13 (raise to 14 and get a +2 Tattoo as soon as you can)

Be aware that if you get a 7th Level Class Bonus in the Fighter class, you won't be able to get the 12th Level Class Bonus as a Thief or a Mage; you can only get the 12th Level Class bonus as a Fighter. Therefore, if you want to get the 12th Level Mage Class Bonus, you need to get the 7th Level Mage Class Bonus first.

You can switch classes on the fly. Once you do it a couple of times, you'll see how easy it is. For example, you could do the following:

Advance to 6th Level Fighter, then switch to the Mage class and level up as a 7th Level Mage to get the Mage bonus, then switch back to Fighter and level up to 9th Level (for maximum hit points and proficiency points and a good THAC0--also, you'll be able to use a couple of items that are restricted to Fighters), then switch back to a Mage, get your bonus at 12th Level, and keep levelling up.

I don't know if that's what I would do; but it's an example of what you could do. Or you could do an endless variety of other things. It just depends on what you prefer.

By the way, the Mortuary business isn't really a nightmare. The Dustmen care lovingly for the dead, and it's a safe place to go when the Nameless One is killed. The only reason you're in danger is because the Dustmen think you might be an intruder. But you can talk your way out or sneak out or simply outrun the Dustmen, so there's really nothing to be worried about. What you need to worry about is who you are and why you have lost your memory. Someone might be trying to kill you, but it doesn't have anything to do with the Dustmen, the zombies, or the Mortuary. They're just trying to take good care of your corpse. :)

No, Vhailor only kills that guy after you've already fought and defeated that guy. It goes back into dialog after you've beaten that guy, and then you can kill that guy (via a dialog option) or let that guy go (at which point Vhailor kills that guy if you don't).
You still have to fight that guy, no matter what.

What kind of "basic gear" do you want to buy? I can't think of many things you need or can afford this early in the game. Besides, you can find a lot of nice items that can't be purchased at a store.

There's a Merchant's Square on the west side of town. Also, if you join one of the guilds, such as the Dustmen, you can buy and sell items through your guild contact, but it might be a while before you can join them. Your travels will take you to other places where you can find shops or merchants.

Here's a tip about merchants. If you try to sell them an item they don't have in stock, let's say they give you 100 gold pieces. But if they already have the same item in stock, you will only get 25 gold pieces for it. For this reason, I like to collect as many of one item as I can before I sell any of the same items to a merchant. For example, I'll wait until I have 20 copper earrings before I sell them to a merchant who isn't already selling them. I'll put all 20 in one character's inventory before selling them.

If you'd like to know an easy way to raise hundreds or even thousands of gold pieces early in the game, just ask. I thought it was pretty cool when I figured it out on my own, and I won't spoil it for you if you'd like to play the game without spoilers.

I'd agree with VonDondu: don't waste your money early on in buying things. Look around, get some cash. There are areas where you can pick up loot that will bring in all the gold you could possibly use, later on. Meanwhile, you should find interesting and useful items just by doing a variety of quests. The money, too, will come in handy for the purchase of spells (if you choose to go the mage route) and tattoos. Just my POV. :)

Gosh I could use any hint on getting cash - I mean good heavens - I stick around thugs to get them to attack me to loot their corpses.... :o
Better yet - I quicksaved before asking a tout directions and the loaded to get one copper back since he didn't know anything special ... (and here you thought you use load after a lost battle...)..O M G *sob*

Ahem. Yes indeed - cash hints welcome. I wanna get them tattoos. Then I won't have to carry clubs hoping to find a buyer for em ...

(shoot me - ease my pain) :D

If you're looking for hints just to get cash, do what we suggested: play out the quests you're given. Nothing more is needed. You'll pick up plenty of cash, that way. Don't worry about hanging around thugs; they have next to nothing.

If you want to be told the locations of places to get unlimited cash, ask. Bear in mind, this will make the game considerably less fun, because it removes an element of challenge. If you can buy any weapon you want, the joy of finally being able to afford and buy one special weapon will completely vanish.

Yea I am aware of that and I would like to know those anyway.
I'll use this knowledge only if deem necessary. At this point I'd simply like to have 2k gold then...411.

I refused to use the gold trick in bg2 to same extent as some people (300k gold in 15 minutes) but it was more then helpful to get the strg belt and the fortress shield early on. I could use simmilar help here.

Okay, here's an easy way to get gold (although it's a bit time-consuming). It's not a cheat, but I suppose you could call it an "exploit".

The two gangs in the Alley of Dangerous Angles kill each other on sight. The Razor Angels won't attack you (if you pay them the 10 gp toll), but the Darkalley Shivs will chase you and try to kill you. All you have to do is lure the Shivs to the Razor Angels' territory, let them kill each each other, and then pick up the loot they leave on the ground. They will respawn endlessly as long as their leaders aren't killed. To make them respawn, leave the area and come back (just step inside a hut and step right back out). You might have to pay another 10 gp toll, but you'll get it back with the first corpse you loot. Don't bother picking up the rusty daggers. You'll get plenty of rings and earrings, and at 15-40 gp a pop, they add up fast. Keep the clot charms; you'll never need to buy any if you collect enough.

Just think of it as orchestrating a gang war. If you think you'd enjoy it, go for it. If you don't think it would be much fun, then don't do it. Just go straight for the quests as soon as you think you can handle them. :)

That's a good tip which is neither cheating nor cheese, IMO.

The Darkalley Shivs don't attack you either as long as you pay the toll to them as well. They are no different from the Razor Angels in that.
The two groups find each other to fight on their own. They don't need you to lure them (though no doubt that would speed things up).
The fighting isn't always going on though, so I'm not quite sure what triggers the bouts of mini-wars they always end up having.

Also, you can load Annah up with Rat Tail charms (which increase her pickpocket), and systematically go through a lot of maps and steal from everyone (although, make sure you save from time to time incase you fail once).

You'll get flithy rich, and no alignment hit, either.

You don't get Annah until later but you can switch TNO to Thief right away with Ratbone in Ragpicker's Square.

Yep seems I was a bit hasty with the I need cash talk. I've gathered some from quests and by keeping rings from the usual thugs I've got more then I can carry. Still - it was cool to see a multi thug war in the alleys.

BTW Is there no penalty for switching between classes ? (other then dropping class specific items) For example I switched back to fighter to learn proficiencies from Porhipron and then went back to mage - should I worry about some repercusions ?

There are no penalties per se, but you really should make it to 12th level first in the same class you make it to 7th level, first, in. That way, a special tattoo will become available with much improved abilities. For example, the Tattoo of the Art that becomes yours if you make 7th level first as a mage gies you +1 Intelligence (among other benefits). But if you then proceed up to 12th level first in the same class, you can buy the Tattoo of the Magi, with +3 Intelligence.

Got it. Also - how far should I go with charisma and wisdom ? (i'm about to purchase some tattoos)

Currently I have 20 wisdom and 14 cha. Should I invest into +2 of each ?
Btw - I understand there's only one copy of "greater" tattoo while there's no limit to +1 ones ? Or do they "restock" in time ?

If I recall correctly, the last time I played, I stopped adding points (at level up) to Wisdom at 19 and stopped adding points (at level up) to Charisma at 16. Dialogue bonuses, special quests, and tattoos eventually raised both of them by five or six more points. Wisdom 25 is maximum (like all stats), and Charisma 21 is optimal for dialogue purposes. Stat requirements (to get the best dialogue options) increase as you go along because the game takes into account the fact that your stats are higher later in the game than they are earlier in the game. But it's very rare that any stat needs to be over 21 to get the best option. Wisdom is most likely to be the required stat or a substitute for another stat such as Intelligence. For example, the game might check whether your Intelligence OR your Wisdom is over 18. But even if the game checks for Wisdom 24 or 25 only a couple of times in the entire game, the experience bonus you get for high Wisdom is too good to pass up.

The highest dialog check for Wisdom is 24, but I'd say let it reach 25 for the experience bonus.
The highest dialog check for Intelligence is 21, and if you make it higher than that you are wasting stat points, even if you are a Mage.

Plus the stat bonuses that you get just for specializing, even without the tattoos.
