video issues with Warcraft 3

Post by humanflyz »

Hi, I have a Radeon 9700 Pro, but I keep on encountering video issues in Warcraft 3. I would play the game for five minutes, and then suddenly the game would lock up without crashing back to the Desktop. Everything freezes, and I am forced to reset my computer. I've tried all the resolutions and the color-depth available, but that doesn't solve the problem either.

I am updated to all the lastest drivers for my video card, sound card, BIOS, and chipset. I also ran dxdiag, and there were no errors in the diagnostic. I've tried the Video Card Tester that Blizzard made, but that only tells me that I have a compatibility issue with my card. The test basically displays a footman animation in fullscreen, but whenever the program went into fullscreen, all I see is gray.

The only thing that I might possibly think of as the issue is that I've added new RAM recently. I bought a 512 MB of DDR266 memory and put it in along with my 512 MB DDR333 memory. But my motherboard supports both DDR333 and DDR266, so that shouldn't be a problem, unless I am wrong. But other than that, I am completely clueless. So can anyone help me?

Personally, I'd keep memory consistent. No, I don't think it is causing your troubles (unless the game worked before you added the memory).

Have you been in contact with blizzard. Yes, it can be long winded but they should be able to help you.

Did you change any other hardware in the computer recently, or, was W3 working at any point and time?

Sometimes, software just won't run with a specific hardware set. I've already seen it happen twice before with W3 on a couple of friends computer's.

You could also update your audio drivers, especially if you have a Creative card. What operating system are you running? What version of directX are you running?
Crush enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the women.

Since you did not specify anything specific, it's best you check on Warcraft 3 Tech support Video issues section

You might also wanna check Warcraft 3 patch colelctions and browse Blizzard Warcraft 3 tech support section for answers ;)

@Ned Flanders:
Well, I only started playing Warcraft 3 after I added the new memory. So I have no idea if that's causing the problem. I am running Windows XP Professional and DirectX 9.

Well, I tried the Video Card tester Blizzard released, and after I've updated to the newest ATI drivers, the Video Card tester worked, but then the game still freezes after ten minutes of playing or so. Maybe I'll just take out the new memory and see how that goes. Meanwhile, if you have more suggestions, please keep them coming.

I've given up on this game. After three hours of tinkering with my computer and trying to get this game to play stably for more than minutes, I am tired. I've tried everything the Blizzard technical support guys have suggested, but none of them work.

Damn, it's such a shame. I loved the game when during those brief minutes when I was actually playing it. Guess it just doesn't work, so I'll have to return the game to the store. Thanks for all your help.
