Maybe as an Undead Slayer (Paladin Kit)? He's immune to level drain, and you *do* meet a lot of undead so that can save you a bit of hassle. Plus only he can use one of the very best weapons available.
Alternatively, a Cavalier (Paladin kit)? For the same reasons except different immunities.
A lot of people go on about the Kensai/Mage combo being up there among the best, provided you can actually get any RP enjoyment out of such an uninspiring class.
A judicious Dual- (where allowed) near the very beginning of the game can be a very good idea to maximise the amount of skills/proficiencies/spells that your character can enjoy for most of the game - be warned though : you'll need to pick exactly the right ability scores to be able to dual- as desired.
High WIS/INT help you with your lore ability - a high lore can save you a LOT of trouble and money.

You don't actually need charisma to be high at the start (unless it's a class requirement of course) as you will very soon pick up a ring that gives you 18 CHA anyway (High CHA helps buy items more cheaply).
Ditto with STR, really, as there are two items available for purchase that will give you either 18/00 or 19 STR.

You can win BG2 with any class, race, or alignment combination.
If you want sheer power, do a search on threads containing the phrase "kensai/mage."
If you just want to have fun, try for a rounded party, and enjoy yourself.

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
IMO you should try a skald as first time. Its main characteristic is to have a song that increases some of your party stats. Using this you have a powerful character, able to cast spells, part fighter, and you'll be able to learn how to use your party and different class/kit.
Anyway, remember that one of the beautiful thing in the game is learning by yourself, experimenting....

u should begin a with not to hard to play with char. i first picked a fighter, i think the easiest class to play with Paladins are also very easy to play with.
When u finished the game start over and take adifferent char.
Assassins are really cool and so are sorcerers but sorerers are a little more difficult as other classes so i got to have some experience with playing with mages .
And when u played the game a couple of times u know when u have to go where and what to do that makes it easier and then u can pick a more difficult class.
Good Luck

I don't know if this relates to your question, but I'm on my second time playing the game. Whatever class you choose, make sure you pick your statistics (i.e. strength, wisdom, int., etc) carefully. When I played the game the first time, I breezed over this, not realizing that my stats were crap. When I finally realized it, it was too late, and I had to deal with having a weak character for the rest of the game.
Silmarie is absolutly right
u should pick your stats really really carefully.
Me, the same as Silmarie, didn't look to it the first time and i didn't know u could reroll (doh!) and the only thing i did then was to get the strenght as high as possible for my fighter so i had a fighter with 18 strenght and the other things about 9/10
that wasnt a strong char.
Good Point Silmarie how could i forget that
