Popups on GB?

Post by Vicsun »

I am the only one who's been getting popups on GB? I thought that after GB joined flashlink they were removed. I don't really mind them, I'm just kind of suspicious since I read no announcement and there seems to be quite a lot of popups (as opposed to pre-flashling GB).

If I'm the only one getting popups I should check out some anti-spy/addaware programs..

I got a few pop-ups aswell. A bit annoying, if you ask me. I can and will cope with it, but I have always been opposed to pop ups. But if Buck needs the help from more sponsors, Ill gladly swallow my pride and deal with it.

ok, so the problem isn't on my side.. Now we just have to wait for buck to post an explanation.

As I said, pop-ups never bothered me, I was just surprised that I got them after such a long non-popup period.

I got a pop up the two first times I clicked on anything in GB, then nothing...... I 2 can cope with pop ups as long as they don't come up with every click I make, then it gets ennoying......

Get Opera 7 - it removes all popups that you don't directly request by clicking a link ;)

I tried it for a while, but for some reason it screwed up the formatting of GB for me, I had fields all over the place.... so I switched back to IE 6. And that's where I'm currently at. I have to say though that if the formatting hadn't been that bad, I'd stayed with Opera as I found it much more to me needs than IE 6...

Buck just updated the homepage. We're no longer members of flashlink, and he is relying on advertising money for the present.

Sorry about the popups today =\. As you can read in this thread, I've decided to drop Flashlink as our third party solution for subscription revenue. In the interim, I've been experimenting with some popups integrated with some new rotation code. This code will allow me to show popups on particular frequencies - time limits, pageviews, etc.

By the end of March, I should have a good solid solution for revenue implemented into GameBanshee. However, part of this solution does include adding more advertisements to the site. Unfortunately, the only ads that bring in decent revenue at all anymore are popups, so I have no choice but to use them.

Some rather questionable pop-ups happened to show up today for me. I'm wondering if something nasty found it's way into the pop-up list, or if it was something missed, but it was definatly not for younger members.

Thanks for clearing it up @ Buck. I support anything that would keep this site running, and I'm pretty sure that 99% of the GB community feels the same way. I just hope you don't have to pay out of your own pocket to keep this site up.

@Aegis, I didn't get any questionable pop-ups. Nothing overly obvious, anyway - I didn't look at them too closely, but I didn't really notice anything inappropriate at first glance.

@all, if you have pop-up killers, put GB on the white-list (if such a feature is available), and wait for the popups to load.. AFAIK, advertisers don't pay unless the popup has loaded...

Dont worry about it, Buck. Its just like a little, slow fly. Easy to swat away, and is insignificant in the broad aspects. If they help Gamebanshee, then I shall easily cope with them and I know about every other member feels the same way. And they dont appear in large numbers nor do they appear an unbearable amount, so they are hardly encumbering.

I wish you the best of luck in finding the solution.

This is the problem. We are heading back to where we were when Buck was trying to find a solution to lack of support before - and on more than one occasion. A few ideas and suggestions were offered, but nothing was viable enough to prove worth investigating as a possible source of regular income.

Those who can, who want to see this board continue, donate. A couple of notes a month to one individual is negligable, when combined it can make a huge difference to Buck.

Those who can't donate via credit card, get clicking the banners, and allow the pop ups to load, it's no big deal.

@Buck, is there any way other than credit card that people can donate?

Each time Buck has asked for support in the past, we have had a flurry of interest. Sadly, it seems that people easily forget when not reminded, which is why Buck is again having to reassess his options.

@ Buck:....Seriously..I do not mind paying for my membership at all. I am not sure donations are something that can be counted on in a budget....but perhaps a tiered membership with Spammers such as myself paying a bit more for the use of SYM...I don't kow, but I would not mind........Gamebanshee is well worth it as far as I am concerned

I totally agree. I rather pay to the full membership directly to GameBanshee than a third party who will take a part of the membership fee.

Unfortuneatly, with a full membership fee, the continual growth of GB will diminish, if not cease completely. It is a sad fact, but people will not pay for something, that they are capable of getting somewhere else. In terms of the quality of the content, how are they to know it's superior quality on GB, if they are unable to access it to assess it themselves.

As for 'taxing' the forum members, specifically based on a tier system, that would cause a lot of people to leave, for various reasons. I could barely afford the Flashlink membership, and doubt that I would be able to easily afford a full membership, as is the case with many members on the board. The most viable solution is what Buck has done, and that is returning to the ad's. While not the most profitable, it is the only method which continues to promote strong growth of community, some form of income, and some stability.

The only thing as members, that we can really do, is to donate as much and as often as we can afford to, or want to, in some cases.
