Some progs which considered critical for your PC

Post by KidD01 »

Some of members used to ask whcih prog need to open this file. Also most of the time we require to check if there's error in Windows registry or etc. Here are some list of prog which you might find useful and probably need to be installed when you buy new PC.

1. Anti Virus Program
We got low morale people keep creating virus time after time nowadays. The AV proggie is a real must on your HDD, and must be turned on when you surf the net.

2. Firewall Program
various kind of people surf the net. In order to keep your PC from hackers or other intrusions it's best to have one of this proggie installed and running when you surf. Zone Alarm got a free version and got adequate feat for your needs.

3. Utility Program
Like Swiss Army knife of your PC :D
I recommend Norton Utility; Norton System Check & Windoctor is by far considered a reliable tool to detect and correct most prob especially registry. Speedisk is better than Windows Defrag. NU also comes with Optimation Wizard which capable to move WinSwap file to front partion of your HDD which literally limit the Swap file size and it also make your PC performance a bit faster. There are others feat of NU which later on you find useful ;)
Second is Sysoft Sandra, this proggie generally gater info about your PC hardwares. It got test feat so you can check which hardware gone wrong - mostly Keyboards, mouse etc.

4. Document & Graphic Program
Generally we have MS Office installed. It's fine anyway. But for PDF files you need Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in yer HDD.
As for Graphic side, you don't need to waste lots of HDD space if you don't do lots of graphic related job. Ulead Photo Impad or Adobe PhotoShop is a good prog. But ACDSee from ACD Systems tkae less space in your HDD and capable to view data inside compressed files (provided you have compression program in your HDD) using ACDSee browser. It mainly act like Win Explorer but better. Files with extension BMP, GIF, JPG, JPEG, PCX, PNG are all graphic files.

5. Data compression program
You need data compression proggie to open file with ZIP, RAR, LHA, ACE extensions. The proggie also can be used to pack your data - which means make it smaller for storage. There are lots of progs avaliable such as WinZip, WinRar, WinAce etc. Installing one of them should sufficient enough.

6. Anti Spyware Program
Best to remove progge with Spyware. use Ad Aware for this purpose and have it handy in your HDD.

7. SPAM Filter Program
Keep it ready just in case you got junkmails in your emails.

Well I hope that covers some questions about which prog for what etc. :)
I'm not dead yet :D :p

Don't use 1, have 2 but only turn it on when I'm not behind the Uni network, don't need 3, have about 5 4's, ditto to 5's, Adaware rocks, and spam amuses me :D

Seriously, all of these things are most useful - for the data compression thing I recommend WinRar as WinAce and WinZip don't read all files, and it has more/better options for fine tuning.
