CPU and the BIOS
CPU and the BIOS
My computer has an AMD XP 2400+ processor, and when I click on "System" in Control Panel, Windows XP indicates that it detects the AMD XP 2400+.
I have a MSI KT4V motherborad (MS-6712), and I recently updated the BIOS from MSI's site to version 1.7. Also, I've installed a MSI program called FuzzyLogic 4 from the CD included when I purchased the motherboard. However, now when I click on "System" in the Control Panel, Windows XP displays that it detects an AMD XP 1800+. I've uninstalled FuzzyLogic4, and it makes no difference at all. Windows XP still says it detects a AMD XP 1800+.
What I want to know is, does this actually affect any actual performance? Or is the display irrevelant? Because I was wondering why there is an a discrepancy of 600, from 2400+ to 1800+. Could the problem be the updated BIOS? And if so, is there any way that I can go back to the older version of the BIOS? Thanks.

Another AMD marketing victim.
AMD names their processors compared the performance with the Pentium ones.
The AMD has an effective processor speed of 1800, but the performance compares with a Pentium 2400.
At least, so they say.
So you have an AMD 1800 Mhz (named as a 2400), but it should be as fast as an P 2400.
At leat, that's what I make of it.
You could also have made an mistake and installed wrong drivers, perhaps they don't support more then 1800Mhz.
But I'm not that good with that stuff.
Hope this makes sence to you.

You could try going back to an earlier BIOS revision, but you probably won't be able to get it from MSI. When you go into the BIOS, what kind of CPU does it say that you have installed? The discrepency only occurs in Windows, right?
You might also contact MSI and see if this is a known issue for them.

Actually, an XP2400+ runs at 2.0 GHz, so I don't think it's that Rob-hin. It's the 2200+ that runs at 1.8 GHz.

@HighLordDave: No, that's the weird part. I thought it was only Windows, but when I start the computer, the BIOS says that it's an AMD XP 1800+. Before I upgraded the BIOS, the BIOS detected an AMD XP 2400+.
@Mr Sleep: I've tried to change it in the BIOS, but there's no such option.
If it helps any, I have an AMI BIOS, currentl at version 1.7.
I am not really worried as long as the discrepancy does not affect performance. But it would be nice to have a correct display or indication.

How old is this new ver of BIOS ? my recent exp. told me AMD have certain prob. I encounter prob in memory size and theri processor compatibility. Yet that's a while ago. Might as well wrote to mobo tech support for more info on AMD compatibility.
Also ya might wanna Google for AMD processor bug

Yay! Problem solved. Thanks for the advices.
I basically messed around with the BIOS settings. It turned out that when I was upgrading my BIOS, some of the settings were changed, for example, my FSB speed. It was originally running at 133 MHz, but the new BIOS somehow set it at 100 MHz, so I changed it back to 133 MHz. Now the BIOS recognizes the proper CPU.
