There were quite a few religions that existed before Christianity came along, with its concept of hell. They had no equivalent, so these religions offered something else. I don't know if it was hope, but I suggest it might have been understanding. Right and wrong was probably not part of that picture.

I find people using faith to guide thier lives a crutch, much like i use herb and beer to get me through crappy days. hey use the euphoric feeling of happinessthrough faith to grant themselves enlightenment.
