Twisted Rune
how in the **** do i kill all those guys in the room. what spells do i use? Aerie has only got lvl 5 spells.
I didn't do a search, but there should be some stuff on Shangy and co. And without knowing your party it's hard to give detailed advice. I like to do that encounter relatively early, so I don't think just because Aerie has only lv. 5 spells should end the story. So here is my 2 cents:

What I normally do is in the room you find yourself in, buff up and get some tough pets going (as good as you can call), say, lesser elementals from the staffs or some scrolls, and buffs like haste, prot from evil (which helps with that female mage's gate), stone skins, mirror image--all this before going into the room and getting Shangy's trail of fire.
Then I get some missle attacks, hopefull some poison from wounding darts and bolts, into Shangy with some snappy pausing to aim before he talks and zaps into the room behind you (yeah I tend to be a trigger-happy bhallspawn). Then I neg. plane protection on a good fighter sort who has +3 weapon(s) to take out that hellish vampy asap!, and sent most of the rest of the party on the beholder and that annoying fighter. I typicaly help the character who is on the vampy the fighter with a mage with flame arrows and MMMs. All the while do your best to avoid the meteor swarms, and kill that annoying pit fiend when you get a chance. It seems like prot from evil 10' on your party before the fight helps the pit fiend just attack anyone, not just your party.
If you don't have +3 weapons, neg. plane protect a buffed mage with MMMs to take out the vampy (you could even cast it in the pre-fight buff to avoid disruption), and throw the vampy some fodder pets to get a moment's time to unload MMMs. Even better: fodder, flame arrow, MMMs.
And if you have a cheesy prot from undead scroll, well, you know...
Spell summary I lean on (all lv. 5 or lower): mag missle, flame arrow, melf min.meteor, summon monster III, undead summons, neg plane protection, breach, oracle, the combat dispel magic (I forgot its name: little white whip icon, lv. 3 spell I think), staffs: summon lesser air and fire elementals, prot from evil 10', and maybe a cloudkill toward that female mage
To get the female mage (her name escapes me) and Shangy, skeletons or lesser fire elementals (good old planar sphere for the staff of fire) help to keep them busy so you can true sight or oracle and breach their annoying defenses. It helps to have weapons, like Frostreaver, that do acid/cold/etc. damage to get a start on disrupting their spells.
Especially early in the game, I typically lose a character or 2 during the fight (which is a pain since I like 4 total member parties), and zap them back to life with the rod of res. (Haerry D's quest) to help get Shangy and the female mage. It is nice because they are brought back at full HPs and full level (pretty cheesy item...). Twisted rune is a good accomplishment for relatively low-level characters

Just highlight the following text to read through the black font.
1. If possible, set all traps where your party initially lands sonce that is where the lich will appear after the dialogue. If you got 7 traps lying in wait, then chances are you'd hit the lich really badly.
2. Have somebody cast true sight (like Keldorn) before stepping into the room.
3. Cast at least two cloudkills at the farthest point without having to step in to the main chamber.
4. The mace of disruption coupled with the shield of harmony would surely take care of the vampire.
5. Have a thief (with cloak of non-detection) hide in shadows before taking a step in the chamber --- normally to nick off the mage before she could even cast a spell.

improved twisted rune with smarter mages or regular????
i am proud to say without a doubt i have the truely cheesy way to beat the twisted rune...my very first post in gamebanshee...years ago in the tactics section.....
major cheese....
wait until you can cast several project image spells, and delay blast fireballs and skull traps....
do the thing with the rogue stone, then send in a image with farsight or wiz eye and load up every spawn point with 3- 5 skulls or delay blast fireballs...images will not trigger the spawn...
shang can be handled with traps like maha said....
now the improved twisted rune with spell 50 and smarter mages, that takes major effort....
so far the best ways look like using chain contingency to triple cast inc clouds on your own party, to kill layne who has a killer script involving the staff of magi, she sneaks right up to your party, and the best way to kill her is to protect your party, and cast multiple inc clouds on your positions to kill her once she sneaks up to you....this should also take care of shaggie....the beholder and others are almost a afterthought compared to layne and the lich...so far, i have been most successful with casting about 9 dragon breaths with every mage in party expending all their spell slots...
the improved one is just nasty, and i added spell 50 and smarter mages...sigh...

Ancient, ancient topic.
That isn't meant as a criticism. It simply means all you have to do is try a search on TWISTED, and you'll bring up at least ten other topics with more than 60 replies on how to deal with the Twisted Rune folks.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
Requirements:
1) Shield of Balduran
2) Mage capable of casting Death Fog (Lvl 6 Spell)
3) Protection from Undead Scroll
4) Thief capable of setting Traps (optional)
5) True Sight, Farsight, Breach.
This is the way I do it. Always works:
1) Keep entire party in Alcove to the left of the entrance.
2) Set traps where Shangalar appears. (optional). If you think it's cheesy, don't.
3) Get Cleric to cast True sight.
4) Send in one Tank with Boots of Speed AND shield of Balduran to talk to Shangalar. Tell him you're there to wipe him out. (I just love doing that)
5) Get the Tank back to alcove, mage casts 2 Death fog in Zone in area.
6) Shangalar appears, gets hit by traps, project image dispelled, chokes on death fog and dies like the dog he is.
7) Cast protection from Undead Scroll on Tank with Shield of Balduran.
8) Once death fog dispelled, send tank out to zone in area, lure in Vaxall and Ravenak. NOT Sheyressa. She WILL ignore your tank, but she'll go
after other party members, and that's a no-no.
9) Vaxall dies by his own rays, Ravenak dies at Tank's hand.
10) Cast Farsight, see where Sheyressa is. Wait till Sheyressa is away from Leyanne (you don't want to take on both at once) and let tank attack her - or send someone to lure her to your tank.
With the Scroll, she's easy.
11) Now Leyanne. She's easy as she has no immunities. True Sight to dispel illusions. Then hit her with anything you have - Fireball, Cloudkill, Breach+Backstab,
whatever. Just interrupt her spellcasting and don't come in her sight if possible while casting - Fireball from distance, etc. DON'T come in her sight. You do
not want TimeStop+Incendiary Cloud+Gate on you.
12) Grab staff, enjoy.
Alternative to 8): Skull Traps - Lots of them at the entrance. You can cast while hidden, then lure in Vaxall/Ravenak. Only problem is Vaxall will get off a couple of rays which you have to survive.

How do I destroy thee?
Let me count the ways.
Once you set traps, like I did, the twisted rune is a cake walk.
My point is, this battle can be preped for as long as you like, once you have the right equipment and cast the right spells, and you know who's going where.
Doing it the proper way like what User and Indra suggested are fine too.
Cheers.

If you have the original Twisted Rune, then you can lure them out one by one. (or maybe 2) This way it's a lot easier. Just use items and spells to protect from certain Runies(shield of balduran, chaotic commands, etc)
Unfortunately this does not work for imp. Twisted Rune.

Hmm I always wait until I've upgraded the Mace of Disruption and bought the Balduran shield. I first have Minsc drink a Heroism potion and with balduran shield and Mace ready I trigger the lich, I move back and swing away, for some reason he goes down almost everytime, it's been awhile since the last time he even managed to cast time stop..come to think of it I'm not sure if he ever manged too.
Of course the balduran shield protects you from the beholder who will see you and if the vampire sees you you have the mace ready to go, don't forget to cast chaotic commands or the vampire just might charm Minsc and then you'd be unhappy\upset (you choose) don't jump out there once you have the lich\vampire\beholder dead, send some minions out to get the mage to cast all her spells, then move in and take her out.
I believe there is one other guy but he's nothing special, just pound him.
And of course leave the rest of you people back.
And this only works for the regular version, I'm no User...
Good luck!
