Kensai/Thief or Stalker Or...? Need some advice..
Hello, I was looking for some advice on Char creation. I've basically started BGII 4 times in the Last 1.5 weeks, each time with a new char, I eventually come out of Irenicus Dungeon at Lvl9 and am unhappy, ditch and start over. Basically I want my char to be:
1) Human. (I do not like Elvish paper dolls!..Besides, Humans Rule!)
2) A respectable fighter - Dual Wield, actually hit something.
3) Have thief Skills - Hide in Shadows, Backstab a must have.
4) Wield Bladed weapons - Blunt weapons are just too...messy!. Gotta have style...
5) Cast respectable mage spells. I've played k/M and R/C, so I know the power of Magic. If my char is to be the most powerful Bhaalspawn in the realms, he would NOT depend on best buddy Immy for all the magic.
Ok, maybe I'm asking too much, but is there any Single/Dual out there which can do this for me? I currently have 2 chars in suspension,
I could go either way.
1) Kensai Lvl9 (+++++Katana,++Dual Wield). (I have the Grandmastery patch installed.) Ready to Dual to Thief. I dualled him to mage and played for a while, but I want something new. Not another K/M game.
2) Stalker Lvl7, still in Irenicus Dungeon. (++Katana, ++Long Sword, +Short Bow, +++Dual-Wield).
Any opinions on which way to go would be really appreciated. With either class (or any new class you suggest) Jan would be in my party anyway as a pickpocket /lockpicker/TrapDetector. I would handle Hide/Backstab/Set Traps. I intend to level up by making Jan steal and learn scrolls. Easy way to get around 80,000 or so Xp. My final team in TOB to be Me, Jan, Immy, Sarevok and Romance intrest. (probably Viccy)...In SOA only 4. Thanks everyone for any suggestions...

You could pull it off if you wanted to run a single-character game and had infinite patience. Otherwise, I think you'd be better off with a dual-class kensai/mage or kensai/thief. Both are fun to play, and offer a range of abilities.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
That's a good point about UAI and scrolls, but I still don't consider a Thief to be a true spellcaster.
Bhaalspawn do receive a few innate abilities if you like to use those. Cure Light Wounds is nice because the casting time is so short compared to the similar Priest spell. If you install some of David Gaider's MODs, your character can gain a lot of spell-like special abilities in Throne of Bhaal. But again, I don't know if you'd consider your character to be a true spell-caster just because of those.
It's too bad a Stalker can't dual to a Thief; that would be a really nice combination.

But this won't be human, and will be very slow (unless solo)

Really it has almost all you mentioned... you lose only backstab capability.

Littiz, I thought about suggesting a Swashbuckler/Mage, but backstabbing seems too important to Indra. I've had a Swashbuckler/Mage in my party before, and I liked her a lot. (Picture Imoen with a blade and a bad attitude.)
But I don't think I'd ever solo the game with one, and I don't think I'd ever play one as my main character. If Indra really wants to play a backstabbing Mage, then a Mage/Thief is an option, but it would be kind of like playing another character like Jan, and that doesn't sound like a melee-oriented character to me. If Indra wants to use backstabbing, poison, traps, and other dirty tricks instead of direct confrontation, there's a thread about Shadow Mages (Mage/Assassins) in the forums, and maybe that's something to look into. EDIT: On second thought, you should probably avoid trying to read that particular thread.
Personally, I believe in splitting up various functions (melee, spellcasting, thieving, etc.) and having my characters specialize in something instead of having one character who can "do it all", but that's just me.

You know what? I've just realized something. If a class doesn't have the title "kensai", "monk", or "sorceror" in it, then, according to this community, it sucks. Wow, I finally see the light.
Cutting the sarcasm, there is going to be no perfect class that has everything you want. The stalker is a great class overall, with backstabs + free dual-wielding + fighter HP, damage, and Thac0 + useful defensive spells + haste. I soloed one through SoA and most of ToB with little trouble (currently about 2/3 through ToB).
Oh, one class I definately suggest you try is the dual-class assassin/fighter. Dual him at level 13 assassin to get the 5x backstab and faster poison. He's one badass killer, and NOT a kensai in any shape or form!

More like Indra wanted a powerful character, as indicated by his first post, and we've obliged accordingly. @Impaler, you don't have to approve, but really--it's his choice, and his thread.

Grandmastery Damage rolls?
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Right now I'm playing a K/T 9/xx, I'm thinking of saving up Mislead scrolls as I go along, for that time in the mindflayer dungeon...
I have a question about Damage Rolls while playing this char. maybe this should be a seperate thread..but...I've installed the Baldurash Grandmastery patch. My char has 5* in Katana, and has 18/51 strength. Using a plain Katana 1d10 he should get at most: 10+3(from Str)+3(Kensai Lvl9)+5(Grandmastery w/Baldurash patch..is this right?)..for a maximum of 21 with Kai. Instead, I see him getting damage rolls of 25 and even 26/27 when he attacked Pebblecrusher and Co at the Den of Seven Vales. Is this a bug due to me overriding something, and if so, how can I fix it? or are there penalties added on to the damage roll which I don't know about?

Actually, After installing the GM patch yesterday night I looked at my Kensai-Thief and realized that he was just TOO powerful. Besides, I felt really cheesy getting Jan to drink 3 potions of Master Thievery and steal Scrolls to get XP. That way Jan should be a millionare and an arch mage by now, not selling Turnips in the rain. So after discussions with my better half, I've come with a more believable char: Me if I had trained as such all my youth: Stalker- 15Str, 17dex, 15Con, 16Int, 14Wis and 14 Char - I really need a team with this man. I'll give up one int point in the dream at Candlekeep, and 1 dex point in hell.. oh, well.. I'll also uninstall the GM patch and limit Jan to just one potion of Master Thievery. Should be MUCH harder and more fun than powerplaying a K-T..(Hey, and you can steal more often..

Obviously, I don't know much about AD&D rules save for what I've picked up from playing IE games, so I'm probably just out to lunch here.
Is there some kind of rule dictating that Kensais must use katanas?
Is a damage roll made each round, or each attack? At the level of your Kensai, you must be doing at least 3 attacks per round, or so. But then your 10/+3/+3/+5 DR should be tripled, correct? Maybe a To Hit roll is also made for each attack, and resistances (like slashing) still apply, so the mean damage per round would be around 25-27?Originally posted by Indra

re: damage - did you take into account the bonus from a magical sword, any gauntlets or girdles? I was thinking about damage the other day. How high could you get. Kensai/Theif level 21/13 (or higher) Weilding Celestial Fury & Croym. Hit with Celestial Fury would be 10 base(Kai) + 3 magic damage + 14 str + 5 GM + 7 Kensai bonus = 39 *2 for critical (lucky or HLA) *5 for backstab (once or theif HLA) = 390hp per hit. And just think, this hit would only take off 1 stoneskin from a mage!
re: Kensai/Theif - this is my favourite character. I have played one a couple of times. I dualed at 13 with 5*in Katana and 3*in 2W style, then took single weapon and the other swords as a theif. Some of the fun is the backstab. I have seen damage over 200hp in one shot (critical & backstabx5). He is still a bit of a challenge because of the lousy AC. After that initial strike, he starts taking damage from the rest of the party. This is where the characters brains come in. It is kind of fun to plan out how to take out a powerful group. I see no problem with this character because you are the child of the lord of murder.
