Just wonder how many versions are abroad in the world. I do not have ToB still, nonetheless in SoA i either have dualed from ranger to cleric and have been able to put 3* in two weapon slot for multiclass ranger/cleric. I do use level 50 rules, though.

Is all right with your ranger's stats? I do not have ToB still, nevertheless i had no problems with dualing in SoA.
Neither i ever had any problem wit 3* in two weapon style for dual or multiclass ranger/cleric.

Just curious, why do they change rules while moving. Apparently not because requests of player community.

Yeah, I'd like to know that as well. I'd also be interested in why Kensai/anything hasn't been banned. :D

I hope you don't mind if I talk about Throne of Bhaal, but if you're planning to use the same character that you used in Shadows of Amn, you might be interested in this.

I played a Stalker dualled to a cleric all the way through Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal. I didn't go solo; I had a full party of six. But I made it a point to solo as many battles as I could, if that makes sense. A 9th Level Stalker dualled to a Cleric was simply too weak as a fighter in Throne of Bhaal, even if you take buff spells into account. So I aborted my first game and started over. I rolled up a new character, a 17th Level Stalker dualled to a Cleric. She was better than the other character, but she was more difficult to develop the "honest" way (I like to earn all my experience). I ended up dropping her into a SoA saved game in Chapter Six with only two other party members so she could earn her experience. (I used the level cap remover.) She started ToB with about 4.3 million experience points, very close to being an 18th Level Cleric and getting back her Stalker skills. If you can find a way to do it that suits your playing style, it pays off. But I still found myself wishing that she had even better skills as a fighter and better saving throws, etc. And I couldn't solo the game with her, because she was not a thief.

So I tried a different character in my next ToB game: a Swashbuckler dualled to a Cleric. Lots of combat bonuses, a nice spell selection, and thief skills. Starting with 2.95 million experience points, I made her a 15th Swashbuckler dualled to a 16th level Cleric, so she hit the ground running. I didn't play her as a tank (I recruited Sarevok for that), but she was versatile enough to use as a tank in some situations. (I also brought along an Illusionist that I rolled up.) When she had accumulated 8 million experience points, I really wished she could have dualled to a Cleric at Level 24. Here's why.

A 24th Level Thief (or subclass, such as Swashbuckler) can choose a special ability. One of the special abilities she can choose is called Use Any Item. It allows a Thief to do exactly that: use any item in the game. It doesn't have to be activated like other special abilities, and it never expires; it's a permanent, full-time ability. Scrolls, weapons, you name it. A 24th Level Swashbuckler with the Use Any Item ability who duals to a Cleric can use any weapon in the game as long as the Swashbuckler class is active. Suppose your Swashbuckler dual-wields longswords. If she becomes a Cleric and then regains her Swashbuckler abilities, she can use longswords again, even though she's a Cleric. Any item. For example, she can wear Vhailor's Helm, cast Simulacrum, and let her double read powerful mage scrolls from her quick slot. Think of the power. If only there was an easy way to get 6.9 million experience points before you started ToB! Maybe if you solo Watcher's Keep or only take one or two characters with you? Could a Cleric (with an inactive Swashbuckler class) do that?

There's over 11 million XP in SoA, excluding Watcher's Keep.

The "problem" with Stalker/Clerics if you have ToB installed is that they are inferior to the Ranger/Cleric multi for just about the whole game. Level 9 Stalker doesn't add too much to your melee skills (nice though it may be), so you'll want to dual at level 13 or later. That means you'll be single-classed for almost 3 million XP, and by the time you regain Stalker abilities, you could have picked Greater Whirlwind if you had been a multi.
