Fight against junk emails

Post by Minerva »

I know it's difficult to avoid completely, but do you have any good way to avoid those junks?

I'm particularly annoyed, because I suddenly began to receive emails from X-rated sites (or maybe one site) past two weeks or so. I cannot send them back, or ask them to remove me from their mailing list, unlike business sites (such as offers of software upgrade or shopping promotion).

I'm using Outlook Express for my emails.

Thanks in advance.

fable found a program a while ago called Spamweasel, and it seemed to do the job quite well. However do you really want to trust a program by that name? :D

Anyway, here's the link.

Mmmm, the name sounds like it does opposite job to what I need... Oh, well, I'll give it a try.

Thanks. :)

You might also want to check your browser's security and privacy settings and make sure they're not letting any and all websites pass you cookies or do other things that give out your email address. I have IE6 at home and there is a privacy tab that I have set to medium-high which only allows cookies under certain circumstances.

Depending on your ISP and how many email identities they allow you, you also might want to set up a "spam" email address that you give out on websites that require an email but that you really don't want to deal with (ie-when you download Adobe Acrobat, it asks for an email so they can send you stuff later).

I have been using a program called Mail Washer that has effectively cut my spam down to zero. You launch the program before you check your email so that it goes onto the server first. You are able to review your messages and identify spam. The program then blacklists these and bounces them back to sender, effectively telling them that your address is no longer valid. Best of all, the program is free. Get it here :)

Possibly coincidental, but since I went over to ADSL from AOL I receive absolutely no junk email. Admittedly, when I purchase from the net or register software etc, I am careful to uncheck boxes that offer information on other deals offered by this company or it's partners unless I know I would be interested...

In comparison, during the change over period that I allowed between dial up and ADSL, I didn't check my AOL account for three days, only to find in excess of 400 emails. Only three or so were from contacts  :)

I presume it is a coincidence, usually one shouldn't receieve any junk mail at all to a standard email address, they aren't published and they aren't seen by anyone, it is only as one makes their way through the internet that the email address is picked up, there is very little one can do apart from as you suggested.

@Minerva, what you might want to do is create a hotmail.com esque junk mail folder. Then analyse what these junk mail's have as their senders and in their subjects and then create a message rule placing them in your junk mail folder, you can then review them at your leisure and delete as necessary.

Thank you, everyone. :)

I don't receive too many junk mails usually, presumably because I don't use huge-worldwide-famous-too-many-members-can't-bother-looking-after-them-all type account, like hotmail, yahoo, and AOL. :D Besides, as Yshania, I always make sure I uncheck the little box in the bottom to avoid unnecessary promotions.

The junks are mainly sent to my old ISP (LineOne.net) which I used to have account for the unlimited 24/7 access. The site was taken over by Tiscali, but I still keep the oldaddress, because I couldn't remember if I used this address for something serious. :o

I've downloaded both MailWasher and SpamWeasel. I somehow worried to use the latter, despite of the recommendation from non other than Mr Flibble. :D
