Favorite video games of all time

Post by ThorinOakensfield »

I was playing Dungeon Siege. Pretty good game, however I couldn't really get into the game. It didn't feel like BG2 and wasn't even close to BG1. When I look back at these great games, what a wierd, kind of spooked feeling I had when I started up Baldur's Gate for the first time. The opening credits have Sarevok kill a Bhaalspawn. Already spooky. Than the haunting music and me not knowing anything and the Gorion dying. God I was totally worried because I hadn't ever played a game like this. What great memories of finally reaching Friendly Arm, so scared of Hobgoblins. Then Nashkel. Then so horrid mines. And finally the city of Baldur's Gate. It was huge. I spent hours doing stuff there. That was some of the most fun I've had in a game. BG2 was really good too, but I had gotten used to gameplay and it didn't get the same feeling on me until Underdark.

Then there are those real classics from my N64. Legend of Zelda; Ocarina of Time, my other really favorite game, possibly better than Baldur's Gate. It was so exciting. So much too do. Once out of the forest, I was going all over. There were so many easter eggs, and hidden weapons and items to get, and hidden quests, and those thousand or so rumours on how to get to the Temple of Light and take the triangle thingy.

Another game which gave me a similar feeling was GTA 3. Amazing game, not as good as the other two, but starting that game off was amazing. I just watched the sunrise over the city. It was beautiful. Then hours spent doing stupid things.

And further back to the old Sega Megadrive days. Still remember all the hours me and my friends spent playing Sonic 2 & 3 and Quackshot. You couldn't save the game, so we had to go on super long streches. We spent hours trying fatalities from magazines for Mortal Kombat 2 and 3.

Its just some games that really get you. They just left me awe and I still can't believe how good these games were. I've played a lot of good games. Civ 2 and 3 are alot of fun. So was Half-life and the 2 million mods made for it. Even Doom and Duke Nukem were fun in the earlier days of the PC. But those games couldn't just compare to Baldur's Gate series, especially the first one, Zelda; Ocarina of Time, MK2,3, Sonic 2,3, GTA3. These games gave me rush. I really loved Zelda, GTA3, and BGs because of their non linearity. Yeah in the end you still have to do some of the quests and missions in a certain order, but alot of smallers ones can be done at any time, and there is often periods when you can go and explore and do all the side pointless but fun stuff.

So what are everybody elses favorite games. The ones that really got you into them.

Well the game that got me into general computer games was a game called "Indoor Sports". It was a crappy sports game for an 1986 or 1987 PC, but I was just a little kid, and thought the little purple and white animations were cool. :D

But the first real game that got me involved in video games was Sonic the Hedgehog and that entire series. The most classic video game of all time, IMO. I still play it and enjoy it 10 years after it came out.

The game that got me into RPG's was Might and Magic III and the World of Xeen. That game still is classic in my mind, and I still play it every couple of years. The animations are cheap the graphics are outdated, but I just dont care. The game is a classic and I still enjoy it. I learned a lot about RPG's and how they work along the enjoyment of RPG's can give.

But my favorite game has been the Baldurs Gate series, for obvious reasons. A true classic aswell and I feel I became addicted to that game and got a lot out of it. Great graphics, and a plot I couldnt let go of. This game is forever etched into my brain and I will never forget it.

Doom and Doom 2. I still remember all the co-op multiplayer tactics I used with my friends for those games.

The BG series holds the crown for me though. Nothing else has really come close to the atmosphere and replayability.

For my Sega Megadrive, I would have to say I spent a lot of time playing MKI and II (my first encounter with the concept of 'gore' :D ) and a first person shooter called "Bloodshot" (especially the VS. mode rocked).

For PC, it's hard to name one game. The Baldur's Gate series are great, but I also like the Myst series and all the Blizzard stategy games (StarCraft, Broodwar, WarCraft II and Warcraft III). Apart from the Myst series (which is not exactly everybody's "cup of tea" ;) ), I think they are all Must-Have's.

"Elite" on my trusty old "Commodore 128"... it was IMO the great-great-grandfather of "Privateer" and "Wing Commander".... must have been around 1986 or '87....but I'm not sure about that...

No worries, **drifts off into memories of those days of gaming bliss**

Deus Ex for the amazing story which you actually affected. Sure BG said you could alter it, but it didn't have the freedom like that found within that wonderful game. And all those cool modifications, cyborgs rule :D

Civ3, never really had my judgement clouded as I did in Civ3. Traitorous Persian scum, after all I did for them. Get the proper world map, and starting locations mod and it starts to become chillingly realistic.

Zelda (SNES) Such a great game and incredibly addictive. Was typically my baptism of fire in to the RPG world.

Must add Ghost Recon, Resident Evil (GameCube version) and Super Smash Bros Melee (Very violent  :D )

Absolutely, one of the greatest experiences on a computer, all I was doing was moving squares around and I loved it! :D

Shogun: Total War, from the amazing multiplayer to the fantastic Risk esque turn based sections the game really has it all.

Unreal Tournament, fantastic game, a great deal of fun to master :) The single player game was also enjoyable, which surprised me.

and many many more.

Zelda: A link to the past on SNES did I play to death, and still do on emu (and I know Ode does too :D ).
That and BGII would be my best shot.

Goldeneye for N64 is also a multiplayer classic.
Icewind Gate II Improved engine, third edition rules and the full BG2 storyline.

Right. I forgot to mention Sid Meier's games-
Civ 1,2,3 and Alpha Centauri. Those are the best strategy games I have played and all of them were very addictive. I think Civ 1 gave me a positive feel for history in general and that has affected my RL. Thats very important. Along with that, it was tremendously fun. Same thing goes with Civ 2 and Civ 3. They all get progressively better as time goes on. When you feel theres not much that Sid can do to make the game better, he goes out and proves you wrong. My hats off to this series because it opened my eyes to things far more than just gaming. An interest in history and geography.

The you must prepare for DOOM 3.............there's rumor about it recently :)

Favorite Video Games ? Pacman still hold the rank - it even made into some kinda TV cartoon movie. Yet I'm into King Of Fighters saga these days. It's on Arcade. And there's rumor about the new installment "King Of Fighters 2002"

Everybody knows it's coming. There are movie clips from the game somewhere too! Looking good... but high tech stuuf.

KoF, there are rom's for those too. But I can't find them anymore after they shut down a site. :(
The can be played with a MAME emulator if you can find any. (try out Streetfighter vs Capcom etc too!)

But BG2 still has my full vote. :D
