Lets just say there was a kid out there by the name of Brett who needed some help with motivation, now this isn't me because I dont need help I swear.

Alright I, I mean Brett, need help with this one problem... Writing an article for the zine I write for at The Last Out Post

Its a classic gaming webpage... I am currently screwin around with the idea of an article about the importance of a good storyline in gaming. Not just rpg's but a good SL in a fighter is fun too ya know?

anyone got some interesting classical gaming stories or such... stuff I could work with. I'll credit you! heh

No credit needed, but for me, the best game plot I can recall is that of Betrayal at Krondor. Although it derives from Ray Feist's novels, he actually had zip involvement with the game. (He got far more involved with one of its successors that bombed.) The game's producer and writer concocted an excellent story in which double and triple-crosses occur, and the actual mastermind behind what's going on turns out to be one of the last people you'd expect--yet it all makes wonderful sense in the end. It also features the required death of one of the main characters you control, certainly not common in CRPGs.

Definitely worth looking at. The graphics are definitely nowhere near state of the art today, but the game really holds up, and was extremely innovative at the time of its release in more than just visuals.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

OK, I've got a couple of ideas.

Sacrifice: A fantastic game with an absoultely innovative storyline, and a fantastic game overall. It comprises so many aspects of games but was not accredited because it didn't sell. Congratulations to Shiny and Interplay for the fantastic game, it was only a shame that it didn't sell.

Giants, Citizen Kabuto: Another amazing game from a (proud to say) British studio. First person gaming with a funny and entertaining storyline, it was one of the games of the year in my opinion, as shown by it's magazine reviews. I loved it, and I think more people should have tried it.

The Red Alert Series: Undoubtedly the history of strategy legacy exists here, it really is one of the best - and most imaginative - storylines existent and is an entertaining series. I own them all. :D

Starcraft: The daddy of strategy, it was just a classic game that deserves mentioning wherever.

Planescape: Torment: What can you say? It shows what can happen with a meticulously designed storyline. You play it, you enjoy it and you experience the birth of a classic RPG.

Deus Ex: Can you not include this? It shows that an FPS doesn't need to have big guns to succeed in it's genre, the wealth of character options, solutions and fun is endless, you've got to experience it.

Freespace 1 & 2: The best star-based shooter in the world in my opinion. Action, storyline and big guns all in two boxes. The explosions rule.

Silver: A European attempt at a genre held by Japanese companies. It's undeniably one of the best games around in my opinion, I loved the storyline, even though it was old-school and typical you could still enjoy it for what it's worth.

That's more than a couple, sorry! :D

Here's 3 (series of) games I can think of:

Max Payne: a third-person shooter. Not exactly a special storyline (one man's vengeance), but a unique way of telling the story through comic-book style interludes, which you can read again afterwards. It also captures the film noir atmosphere of the game nicely.

The Myst series: by the concept of the game itself (puzzle adventure), a lot of the game's success depended on the story. As such, the Myst series tell the story of the fall of the D'ni culture and of worlds falling apart, interwoven with the personal tragedy of Atrus' family.

Need I mention Baldur's Gate :D ? Great RPG, telling the epic story of the Prophecy of Alaundo and the Bhaalspawn.
