Your Holiest Day (NO SPAM)

This Monday, the 16th, turns out to be the tenth day of the first month on the Jewish calender, which is Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the jewish calender. It is the day when a person fasts and prays all day to god to forgive him for his sins commited against god over the past year. To be forgiven of all sins commited towards other people, he must go over and ask forgivness from every person he hurt, and is therefor clean and holy to properly accept the new year.
This day is respected and honored all over Israel as a holy day, and even the majority of the population which is normaly classified 'non-observant' largley takes part in the fasting and obsrevances.

I am rather ignorant as to other religions practices, and was hoping to gain knowledge on similar annual events that take place in other religions.

The most important holiday for a Christian is Easter. This is the day the miracle happened where Jesus was resurrected and showed he was the messiah.

...but for the commercialized Christians, it would be Christmas.

And how does the average person celebrate this? By giving Easter eggs to children and saying the Easter Bunny came and put them there....erm where in the Bible does it mention Easter Bunny's???

To answer Morlocks question, generally Easter is considered the most important and if I recall correctly there is time lent which is used for fasting and worship similar to what you describe.

Posibly of interest to some:

Easter was adapted from widespread pagan fertility rites dating back to the worship of Ishtar and Ashtera...Both female deities popularly worshipped in conjunction with the Habiru tribal god Yod-He-Vau-He (commonly Yaway). Similar Rites were celebrated throughout Europe as Beltain. These fertitlity feasts were celebrated with bonfires, orgies, blood sacrifices, and ..eggs, a symbole of fertility..., The Catholic church , in their efforts to displace the indiginous pagan customs, adopted these festivities, and "Christianized" them, making them more acceptable to the Church.The Holy day came at the end of the Lenten fast,(Lent is the most similar Christian Holy Time to Yom Kippur, observed in much the same fashion) and is symbolic of the death of sin, and rebirth, of the spirit.

The Sacrifice of Christ replacing the "Letting of Blood" which served to fertilize the fields.

The Descent into Hell replacing the sowing of the crops.

The Resurection of Christ symbolic of the harvest to come.

The Cross replacing the "Tree of Life" which has a world wide history as a mythic image in and of itself.

Are only a few of the adaptations which are taken for granted as being purelyChristian in their origin.

I think it worthy of note that as human beings, we continue to celebrate, in whatever form that which is so profound it evades our understanding...essentially the cycle of life...

note: please do not see this as an attack on Easter. That is not my intention, but simply to reflect on the commonalities between the old religions and the new...

I think this is the difference between spirituality and Religion...

Shouldnt every day be the holiest day of the year?

Not trying to flame anyone or start a big rant but it seems people use times like Lent etc as an excuse to be a complete prat for the greater part of the year but have the satifaction of being absolved becouse there nice 1 day out of the week, or 30 days a year or whatever

I mean I say.. Props to jesus, s'nice.. But easter is no more special than any other day,

You might have good days and bad days, but theres always those few moments when you wake up in the morning (Before anything even has a chance to go wrong) and you realise you dont get many days... You cant afford to waste any

So I say... For the spiritual everyday should be the holiest day of the year

And funnily enough.. I agree with myself
