America's culture of narcissism
America's culture of narcissism
Here is the link to an article published by the Toronto Star today. I found myself nodding through it, and I thought I'd post it.
If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
Sadly, i must agree with this article. September 11th is in no way the biggest event in history, i probably wouldn't even put it in the top one hundered. Basically the only affect it has had is a change of government in afganistan, and i wouldn't bet money that its going to last. The innability i see in my fellow americans to be anywhere near as angered or saddened by events like the Holocaust, Stalin's murder of millions of russians, constant violence in the middle east, balkans, africa, the injustices of the USA on its own citizens, ectera, and yet their complete focus on a single tragic, but relativly insignificant, event in our recent history is horrifying to me.
Unfortunatly, everything still is the same. For maybe a few months, I was proud to be an american, but then everyone went back to screwing each other over.In the latest issue of Harper's, Mark Slouka captures it well: This is the biggest news story of all time. Nothing will ever be the same.
If I asked, would you answer? Its your problem. Its a deep, deep problem. I have no way to ask about that... I have no elegant way of stepping into your heart without tracking in filth. So I will wait. Someday, when you want to tell me, tell me then. -Bleach
