Kruin and his pals

Post by fable »

As a rule, my good parties surrender the silver blade to Kruin and his githyanki buddies--but not my neutral/evil ones. However, I've always found this fight among the toughest in the game, perhaps because, unlike the various dragons, Bodhi, Irenicus, etc, you're not focusing on a single target to win.

I was curious what other people have tried in facing Kruin...successfully.

Hmm, well by the time my party hits them, I always have good equipment, so usually they go down quick, Divide and conquer works wonders for the poor normal AI. I always concentrate on the spellcasters first, everyone locking on one target. Then I move to the next, COF (concentration of force) is very good. Which, subsequently I am trying to get the enemys to do (use the COF techniques) for whats it worth.

Good party:

I tank, as a kensai/mage, Kruin.

Keldorn use Flail of Ages switching to Carsomyr on another.

Valygar with Impaler, either helping one of the other two, or soloing another Gith.

Everyone else either stand and gawk or provide ranged support

Evil party:

Me as Kensai/mage...again tanking Kruin.

Korgan take out another.

I didn't find this really that tough of a fight. Just alot tougher than previous Githyanki encounters so it can catch people off guard. Once you reload and retry however, it usually end in victory.

Is this the time the gith show up in Athlkatla after you get back from the Underdark? I never have had too much trouble with it, but I do have a funny story:

I was just coming back into town, and the Giths showed up. i noticed that Edwin didn't have his stoneskins up, so I cast a set...Of course I forgot about the cowled enforcers, having been away from town for so long. Anyway, let me tell you that fighting those giths while cowled enforcers are warping in is a pretty crazy battle! I did end up having to reload, but I would recommend trying this out to anyone looking for some fun.

Heh, @Jaker. Maybe it's because I have it set to insane mode, but Kruin always has plenty of spellcasting helpers available when he shows up. Like I said, it's one of the tougher battles--especially this time around, since my party deliberately left most of the chapter 2 quests alone, so as to make the Underdark more difficult.

Strangely this encounter is either very easy for me - your regular a-lot-of-cannon-fodder-enemies - or rather difficult. The problem is that the gith have that innate ability to render you unconscious, and the spell has an irritating modifier -4 or something the like! Also, the anti-paladin (!) and Kruin both have maze as an innate ability, which is very cruel if you solo.
So in my games, it's really a matter of you making the saves or not (wearing the cloak of mirroring doesn't help, as maze and the gith spells both are "neutrualizing" and not "offensive").

Gotta hate that mazing spell.

This time around, interestingly enough, Kruin wasn't a problem. I just kept summoning monsters and removing his group haste and strength spells. Keldorn concentrated solely on him, and True Sight helped a great deal.

Heh, I fixed that problem. Find a nice area with few or no innocent bystanders in Athkatla (I used the roof of the Copper Coronet) and prepare to butcher a couple of waves of Cowled Enforcers. Cast a spell with one of your guys while he's away from the party(so they dont warp into the middle of your party). Eventually, you'll face off against the most powerful mages in the Cowled Wizards, like 3 20000 exp mages(plus that 120 exp cowled enforcer.) They have some good scrolls, and they dont bother you about casting spells anymore after that. You may have to leave the area after killing one wave as it seems they dont always spawn when you cast a spell if you just fought a group. ;)

Hey Jaker, why hadn't you bought a license to use magic? It's only 5000 gp and you can cast magic in Athkatla to your hearts content and no cowls bugging you

I don't usually buy the license because I can avoid casting spells in the streets easily enough, and later on in the game I want to kill a bunch of cowled wizards for the experience and "kicks". If you buy the license you can't ever get them to show up again. I just didn't mean to start a fight with them right when I was also fighting a bunch of crazy giths.
