Quotes That Strike You (Little Spam Please)

I was watching Cast Away just now, and Tom Hank's character said something that really struck me.
I've got to carry on breathing because tomorrow is a new day, and you don't know what the tide will bring in...

This just stuck in my mind absolutely. So this thread is a place to post your positive quotes, you never know, it might brighten someone's day. :)

I already posted

All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be

in a lyrics thread somewhere, but it is such a good one that it is worth repeating IMHO :) .

I also like, IIRC

To do wrong is the greatest of evils

a Plato quote, possibly remembered incorrectly. So there you go, and happiness too :) .

Well I like quotes a lot, so depending on how long this thread survives, I might post more as time goes on....

"Its hard to fly with the eagles when youre surrounded by vultures" -??? Dont know where I heard it, but I liked it.

Nero's dying words were something like this:
"Oh what a great artist the world has lost in me"

That was hilarious because he was inept at all the arts and this line demonstrates how blocked out from reality he was. :D
“Caw, Caw!” The call of the wild calls you. Are you listening? Do you dare challenge their power? Do you dare invade? Nature will always triumph in the end.

This one stuck with me for so long...

...I forgot where and when I got it.

Here goes:

Quote from Martin Niemoller: -- "In Germany, they first came for the communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Catholic. Then they came for me -- and by that time there was nobody left to speak up."
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Plato is emminently quotable and "stickable".

Only the Dead have seen the end of war.

One of my favourittes now :) .

Anyway here's a couple of my own:
From Fightclub
  • Narrator: This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time.
  • Tyler Durden: Our generation has had no Great Depression, no Great War. Our war is spiritual. Our depression is our lives.
  • Tyler Durden: You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everything else.
  • Narrator: When people think you're dying, they listen, instead of waiting for their turn to speak.
  • Tyler Durden: Self-improvement is masturbation.
  • Narrator: On a long enough timeline, the survival
rate for everyone drops to zero.
  • Narrator: If I did have a tumor, I would name it
Marla. Marla, the little scratch on the
roof of your mouth that would heal if only
you would stop tonguing it, but you can't.
  • Narrator:With a gun in your mouth, you speak only
    in vowels.
  • Narrarator: We were selling rich women their own fat
    asses back to them.
There are a lot more, but I don't feel like listing any more ;)
Vicsun, I certainly agree with your assertion that you are an unpleasant person. ~Chanak

I love fightclub, the book itself is great the movie is just a splendid additon. But my favorite quote from the book/movie has to be the narrator saying "Nothing is static, everything is falling apart. Everyone you love will die, everything you create will be destroyed."

Dark.
Jackie Treehorn: People forget the brain is the biggest sex organ.
The Dude: On you maybe.

Oooo...quotes are good. My first one isn't from the most popular of people, to say the least, but I like it. I may post more later, I've got a ton.

"The leader of genius must have the ability to make different opponents appear as if they belonged to one category." -Adolf Hitler

"The trouble with the world is that the stupid are ****sure and the intelligent are full of doubt." -Bertrand Russell

"Men are born ignorant, not stupid, They are made stupid by education." -Bertrand Russell

"War does not determine who is right - only who is left." -Bertrand Russell

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." -Theodore Roosevelt
I need a sig.

Ooooh! I LOVE quotes!!

I know everybody likes the quick little ones (and I have lots of those, too), but here is a lengthier one from the king of long sentences, Charles D!ckens.

A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other. A solemn consideration, when I enter a great city by night, that every one of those darkly clustered houses encloses it’s own secret; that every room in every one of them encloses it’s own secret; that every beating heart in the hundreds of thousands of breasts there is, in some of its imaginings, a secret to the heart nearest it! Something of the awfulness, even of Death itself, is referable to this. No more can I turn the leaves of this dear book that I loved, and vainly hope to read it all. No more can I look into the depths of this unfathomable water, wherein, as momentary lights glanced into it, I have had glimpses of buried treasure and other things submerged. It was appointed that the book would shut with a spring, for ever and for ever, when I had read but a page. It was appointed that the water should be locked in an eternal frost, when the light was playing on its surface, and I stood in ignorance on the shore. My friend is dead, my neighbor is dead, my love, the darling of my soul, is dead; it is the inexorable consolidation and perpetuation of the secret that was always in that individuality, and which I shall carry in mine to my life’s end. In any of the burial-places of this city through which I pass, is there a sleeper more inscrutable than its busy inhabitants are, in their innermost personality, to me, or than I am to them?

Peace.

I think that music has some of the strongest quotes because they are supported with sound and fury (I couldn't resist :D ;) )

Bad Religion, the best of the Punk Rock bands ever, has some great, if depressing quotes.

- 10 million dollars on a losing campaign, 20 million starving and writhing in pain.

- The party convention and the new politic, the faces always differnent the rhetoric the same.

If any of you have ever lost a friend to suicide, and I pray that you never do, I suggest listening to "Too Late" by Ten Foot pole.

- When she first apoligized, it seem that no one cared, no one cared about her shame, no one cared about her pain. And she could accept that no one gave her time, she said they will watch me, yes by god I'll make them see. My god I can't believe your gone, it's too late to say hang on. Sometimes you just have to wait, this time it's just to late.

And my personal favourite, Avril Lavigne, who won best new artist at the MVA;s W00t!!!
- Is it enough to love, is it enough breath, somebody rip heart out, and leave me here to bleed. Is it enough to die, somebody save my life, I'd rather be anything but ordinary please. (repeat)
Let down your defenses, use no common sense, if you look you will see that this world is a beatiful laxulant turbulant succulant opulant permanant noway. I wanna taste it, don't wanna waste it away
The waves came crashing in like blindness.
So I just stood and listened.

In your own little zone, like a drone
Working in hives all your lives
bowing down to the throne" (Heitham Al-Sayed)

1 of my favs:

To me, it's a good idea to always carry two sacks of something when you walk around. That way, if anybody says, "Hey, can you give me a hand?" You can say, "Sorry, got these sacks."
