I was thinking about creating a monk/rogue combo, sounds like the ultimate ninja-type assassin to me. However, I read on the Bioware NWN site, that once a monk chooses another class, he can never again advance in his monk class. Is this true ? I think I read that quite a lot of people play Monk/Rogues.
One other thing : what exactly are monk weapons ? All eastern exotic weapons ? Specifically, can a monk automatically wield a katana, or does he have to learn the exotic weapons skill ?
Multi-Classing Monks ?
A monks best weapon is his fists. If you muticlass a monk he/she will never reach the upper levels of experience that give the maximum bonus to his fists. From a power gaming standpoint multiclassing a monk will be very limiting.
From a roleplaying standpoint, a monk/rogue or monk/druid combo sound kind of neat. I would, however, argue that a ranger/rogue would be a better combo than the other two. Rangers - aside from some minor spells - don't get many high level abilities - therefore multiclassing them has very little penalty. A rogue gets enough skill points each level to get his major skills high enough without having to max out levels. Think of ranger/rogue 9/11 - level 9 for ranger to get bonus attack with two weapons.
If you want to multiclass a druid - realize that you are losing out on some high level spells. I would not take more than 3 or 4 levels of another class - probably barbarian, ranger, or fighter - just to get some extra feats and combat abilities.

monk weapons do not include the katana.
from memory - (there may be a better list on the gamebanshee frontpage) kama, shrieken, hand axe, club, crossbows, sling, dagger. and not much else.
but as smass points out the best weapon for monks, is the fist. (and remember halflings / gnomes do less damage w/ their fists)
the addition of sneak attack to your arsenal may compensate for a few lost rogue levels. but to be honest, the rogue's skills would of been mostly useless to a high level monk - elemental damage makes short work of locks, and the damage avoid saves made traps almost harmless. the monk should be able to sneak around just fine by himself.
use magic item would be pretty cool.
i've only multi'd a monk in the academy, starting as a wizard, he was able to gain monk levels, i'd recomend a test run, create a monk, 1st level up -> rogue, then see if you can level up monk when you exit the academy.

"all around you is tinder for the gods"
I played multiclass monk/rogue/sorcerer, and can say it was neat experience. In NWN, it does not matter to monk if he changes class, I advanced steadily on all classes. True, you don´t get the neat tricks monk get´s at higher level, but this was so neat experience that I totally felled in love to this combo.
Btw. It was neat to watch the monk fight with two-bladed sword.
Was like Darth Maul.
