Old music tape to CD

Post by Minerva »

I'd like to know how to copy my old cassette tapes on to CDs, using my CD-RW. I have a few tapes of my band, and I don't want to lose them (and they are certainly not on sale in shops. :D )

Thank you in advance.

The only way I've ever found to do this is to plug a tape deck into the 'line-in' port on your soundcard and record the input directly using an audio recorder/editor, and save it in .wav format. You'll need a lot of hard drive space for this.

The resulting files can then be written to CD and played in a normal CD player. Most CD writing programs include an audio CD option, and automatically convert the audio files to the format used for audio CD's.

If you have any friends who work in a TV our radio station, they have the equipment to transfer music from a cassette tape to CD easily and at a high level of sound quality. Some local radio stations or sound recording studios can also do this for you but it can cost a lot of money.

The added bonus of getting someone else to do the actual recording is that it's not your hard drive being used to store the music and they probably have better equipment than you do in your personal computer.
