Travel in our solar system

Post by C Elegans »

If you could go to another planet or moon in our solar system and be there for a while without consideration of lack of oxygene, temperature etc, where would you go? Would you like to see the majestic storms of Uranus, the ice fields of Titan, the huge impact craters on Proteus or the lava flows and sulpurous atmospere of Venus? Or perhaps you'd prefer and asteroid or even a comet?

As for me, I'd like to go to Mars and climb the highest moutain in our solar system, Olympus Mons at 24 000 meters ( 78 000 ft).

Pluto - I'll be far away from my gigantic enemy. ;)
While others climb the mountains High, beneath the tree I love to lie
And watch the snails go whizzing by, It's foolish but it's fun

mercury - having the sky dominated by the sun would be amazing. kinda disturbing probably, but it would look unlike anything else
Here where the flattering and mendacious swarm
Of lying epitaths their secrets keep,
At last incapable of further harm
The lewd forefathers of the village sleep.

LOL :D Maybe you should go for Charon instead, I think it is further away from your antagonist than Pluto most of the time. (The orbit each other as you may know.)

Yes, that would be better. :)

Do you know of any planet/moon that always have the same side towards the sun? I would love to live in a constant dusk. :)

Hmm...it's a close call between two of Jupiter's moons, worlds apart so to speak (har har) which are Io, the moon which is ravaged by volcanoes, so active that it actually turns itself inside out every few years, or Europa, which is totally covered by methane ice, in intricate patterns all over it's surface. Both, I can imagine, would be incredibly beautiful :)

The rings of jupiter and the moons as kam said
Now that would be nice...or more honestly just to hop from planet to planet or from system to system.
I would want to see all there is not be stuck on one planet.

Edit: Added the moons in the first line.

The planet Uranus spins on its side, at an angle of about 91° or so to the Sun's plane, so that one hemisphere is always in the light, and the other is always pitch black.

Are you sure you don't mean Saturn? The rings of Jupiter are small, weedy, and...black :D Not the most impressive sight ;)

I would swim in the highly dangerous waters of Neptune... Saturn is my favorite planet, but seeing as how many other SYMers would occupy it at the same time, I'd go the the great blue beyond... I like my privacy. :D

We seem to share taste in natural beauty, I'll join you after my climb, just bring me a drink! :D

and remember to visit Island and the Kamchatka penisula for the closest thing on this planet

@Dottie: Our own moon always face the sun with the same side, but going there is a bit of a bore, isn't it?

Choose one of it's almost 30 known moons or satellites then, and you can sit alone and watch the spendid beauty of Saturnus! :)

Hey, we have a wide selection of drinks...should be no problem :) Unless they get frozen :D

Hmm...maybe when I have some money, then I'll go travelling ;)

Well no, actually - the moon always faces us on the same side, the sun shines all around it (hence phases of the moon).

Cool - with all the people roaming the Sol-system I would just stay here at eath and take all your money and stuff. You can get it back when you return to earth, if you work hard for me that is :p :D

Hehe - well I think I would go to Venus to find out if women really come from there :D

Of course you are right Kam, I confused things, so it's Uranus for Dottolus then :D

Frozen drinks is not a problem, I'll probably be quite hot after having climbed 24 000 meters. :D

You'd better not - I have just promised myself to cease flirting with guys who could be my sons, it is tasteless and unhealthy for them.
