Good rule of thumb: if you don't recognize the names, it's because they've come and gone. Mutt doesn't even show up in the Members database (though birthdays seem to remain behind much longer), and God of Air stopped posting in February, while never visiting this forum.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Nonetheless, it takes me but a moment to wish them happy birthday, and I have lost nothing for doing so.
If they don't see it then it's no big loss, and if, in the unlikely event that they do stop by and see it, they do, then they feel good that someone has wished them a happy birthday.

Any idea where this expression comes from? I mean, was there someone named Thumb? Was he/she a good ruler?Originally posted by fable

"Weazel the Thumb"
Born August the 13, 1098 in the Highlands of Louisiana to the ruling tribe of L.A. (Lower Alabama)
Became leader of the tribe at the age of 15...His father 'Weasel the Toe' died in a very bad hangnail incident.
He, Weasel the Thumb, ruled for 7 years and IMHO it was a good time. He introduced the filtered peace pipe, 8 day week (didn't catch on though) and the Thumb of Investment...(which lead to his fall)

Thanks! I had always wondered about that! I can finally die in peace!!Originally posted by Weasel

According to a story I heard in way back in college, the expression comes from the olden days when corporal punishment was commonplace, not only in schools but in the home. In many states, there was an alleged law which allowed someone to beat their children (or spouse) with a switch so long as it was no wider than their thumb. I don't know if this is true or an urban legend, but it's a plausible story.Originally posted by McBane
