My modem(56K)is going at 2400 some times it'sREALLY annoying any ideas?

Do you have any other devices using the same phone line? (eg. fax, telephones, other computers)
Often a major cause of modems transferring that slowly is due to excessive line noise, and can be caused by other devices on the same line, bad environmental conditions or low quality cabling. If you can hear a bit of a static hissing on the line when using the telephone you may find it worthwhile getting the line checked by your phone company.
