SPOILER(highlite to read)
What battle do you mean? The one in the tree? there you should dispell his protection spells, or wait at a safe place untill they run out and then melee him.
The fight in hell is a little tougher. Timestop works great if you have that spell. Go for the demons first, and then go for the slayer-irinicus. Make sure you drink every potion you have and use every protection spell.
I didn't find him that tough when i was meleeing him, and casting spells.
What level are you?

I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.
I'm gonna guess this is the battle in hell. You could use Horrid Wilting to get rid of the deomns quickly. But I just used a lot of summonsto occupy Irenicus while I chunked each demon individually. It's not too bad.

I actually used the summon horde option from the limited wish. I didn't know at the time what the result would be
But, I was in a cramped area, and lo and behold, the demons were surounded and couldn't move, so, I just hammered them from long range and with my close in fighters while they concentrated on the summons.
As far as irenicus, just hit him with everything you got (haste helps) and keep hitting him til he falls eventually.

Uh... you are not talking about Improved Irenicus here, are you?
The "normal" Irenicus can be easily killed:
S P O I L E R
Your summon four Skeletons and a Deva or a Planetar. You cast all the usual protection spells on your party (Bless, Stoneskins, etc. --DON'T forget Protection from Evil 15' radius) and then you put the last Tear of Bhaal. Irenicus comes in, gives his little speech, and... the battle begins. Your Planetar can deal with him as much as you do. Your Skeletons keep a bit busy Irenicus' pets and you decide which one you would like to slaughter first.
When the demons etc. are gone, you head for Irenicus. All you need is a few spells to bring down his protections (Breach, Pierce Shield, and if you have some level 7 spells such as Ruby ray of reversal or Khelben's warding whip, all the better!). Your fighters should finish the job.
Cheers

Jonny I is no problem if you have 2 decent fighters. When Irenicus comes out after you place the last tear in, your party will be placed according to the computers wishes. 4 Demons and a slayer as in the middle. THERE IS NO NEED TO KILL THE SLAYER!!! I recommend taking your best fighters and telling them to destroy the demons 1 by 1.....run your weaker members away or 'train' them onto your fighters.
Once all of these are dead do a true seeing and the projected image of Irenicus (the slayer in the middle) should go away. Head south and get ready for a simple fight. If you want to slayer change the fight should be easy. If not then you will probably need a few warding whips, breaches or a spellstrike if you are an ultimate badass and can afford it. After this Irenicus can be hacked to death pretty easily.
