Because Khalid is dead in BG2.

Well regardin that new NPC - we just have to wait (unless the info gets leaked ) - for all we know, it could be anybody from Drizzt over Elminister to Gorion (wouldn't be the first time somebody gets resurected )
Actually I'd like it if Gorion comes back to help you.
But if we should take the inteview word for word - it actually says
"you may have seen him in past BG games."
So my money is on somebody that has appeared in both games, like Drizzt and/or Elminister.
Therefore I don't think it will be Irenicus
After I saw the picture, it seems to me that it is not Irenicus nor Elminster nor DRizzit. It may be Gorion.... but I am not sure. It remembers me to Minsc......
Now, did you check the lead to the picture? It says "There's never a miniature giant space hamster around when you really need one". Stupid reference to Minsc and Boo?? Or what would it mean???? (I am just rambling)
We are the purest sons of mighty Numenor. You do not deserve to speak to us.
In one of the screenshots on that page (the one with the big fan), if you look in the lower left corner, you can see what appears to be Elminster casting a spell. Of course, given how well screenshots for these games reflect actual in-game action, this could be completely bogus, but it gives a little credence to the idea that Elminster makes an appearance (not necessarily as a controllable character, like Minsc or Imoen, more like Drizzt in Bodhi's lair).
Anyway, the idea of controlling Elminster or Drizzt (or Irenicus - I can just picture the dialog "Irenicus?! Aren't you supposed to be dead?") as a party member sort of flies in the face of, well, just about everything.

I like to point out that Elmister image was used in the first stages of BG II during the time that the engine was being refined.
Now guess who S.A. Salvarore character show in BG I. (besides Drizzt)
What if the new NPC will be...Ribald Barterman? Or even Saemon Havarian..! Although he looks like some kind of a mage...on the other hand, that pic doesn't have to be the face of the new NPC. The fact is that Saemon Havarian can't possibly be dead...don't know about Ribald, haven't tried to kill him. Try to think some other chars than Elminster, Irenicus or Drizzt...come on guys, you've gotta have more imagination than that

Here's a possibility that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned yet.
The new NPC could be Solaufein. The Drow that you help and save in Ust'Nautha. It makes sense to me, and remember that one dialogue option with him is that you offer to let him join the group. I, for one, sure wouldn't mind having him for an ally. Besides, it might make for some interesting party banter between him and Viconia.
Besides which, I saw where someone mentioned something about white hair or something? Well, Drow have white hair generally speaking.
One thing's for sure, I hope it isn't Elminster or Drizzt or something lame like that. There's more than enough mages in BG2 as it is without adding him into the mix, and I'm not the world's biggest fan of Drizzt either. Anyhow, that's my 2CP.
How about Cadderly? Supposed to have hair if I'm not mistaken, but who knows what with the ageing and all...

Life seems short considering how long you will be dead.
Well I don't know - but I'm still betting on somebody that was in both BG games.
"you may have seen him in past BG games."
Could we be looking at Neeber/Noober or maybe Biff
As for the screenshot of possible Elminister (looks like him anyway) it could just be that he is around a part of the game - and you help him fight monsters like Drizzt in BG1.
Very good that Solaufein thing...it could indeed be him...sound much more likeful than Elminster or Drizzt or IRENICUS! Would be nice too.

wasn't Cadderly in BG I? I'd be really interested in what characters were there.
YES, he was (easy to miss, he talk to us in the second time there, just before going inside the keep), but if he will be the ToB NPC, I dont know.
R.A. , correct (Were did I get R.A. in the first place)

I would like to see him as a NPC too.

Relooking af the picture with the new NPC-portrait (maybe the new portrait) it does not look like a drow (fair skin), but looks like it could be for the "wild mage"-class.
But Solaufein could be cool as a NPC, he seemed a good fighter
yah, if you've read the salvatore books talking about before Drizzt left the underdark, soloufein sounds a lot like Drizzt's dad-a really neutral type of drow, not completely good but not in love with evil either. I think it would be extremely interesting to have him as an NPC.
It would also be extremely cool to have Drow as a racial option for our PCs.

Since that are many that dont know about many of AD&D spells...
Cloning is a spell but as you have seen it dificult to work (very dificult), Kalid is dead (Irenicus did not kill him, acording to Imoen he was already dead) and beyond resurection (Irenicus made sure of that).
Besides all who were sucesseful in romancing Jaheira would not like that.

I noticed one thing wich they said:
"introduce at least one new nonplayer character that can join your party--he or she will presumably be a wild mage"
This fits with the NPC-portrait in the screenshot. But still if this is the case - why so secretive about the NPC if it isen't somebody "big".
Can't be Solaufein. Doesn't look like a drow. Drow have a black skin. This dude doesn't.
Saemon would be kewl. Then I can finally pay him back.
MUHAHAHAHA!!...
