I know the order in which to place the hand, the staff, the blood and the ring but for the life of me I can't figure out the mechanism by which to 'place' each of the items in the proper pipe! How do they go from inventory to the pipes?

Just stand as close as you can to the pipes, and click on them, you´r cursor should be 2 arrows making a circle, then when you click it will either do what it should do, or say "You are to far away", and then you have to walk closer.

Just knowing the order from left to right isn't enough..you need to click on the pipes in a certain order as well..then the proper item will be removed from your inventory automatically..

So its Pipe 3 first, then pipe 1, then pipe 2, then pipe 4. I simply stand in front of the pipes in this order and the appropriate 'key' will be taken? Sounds easy enough. Thanks.

No, that is not correct. You have to go up next to the pipe and then click on it just like that electricity machine in irenicus' laboratory. Anything you need to manipulate will have a couple arrows that form a circle.
