Has BG1 gotten easier?

Post by Astafas »

I've started playing BG1 once more after two years with P:T, IWD and BG2. I remember having some difficult fights in BG1, even the 10th time through when knowing the game by heart (Daevorn comes to mind). I just entered BG and it's ridiculous how easy it's been so far. Was the game truly that much easier than the newer ones (BTW, I always play those in normal mode)?

My party consists of:

Kagain - Axe
Kivan - Long Bow and Long Sword
Machiavelli (H-E Bard) - X-Bow and Twohanded Sword
Viconia - Hammer and Sling
Dynaheir - Staff
Imoen - Short Bow and Dagger

I recently played BG1:TotSC for the first time in nearly two years. It did seem a lot easier than it used to. But I think that's because I'm a better player than I used to be, not because the game is "easy". It took a long time for me to learn how to play as well as I do now. After playing BG2 SoA/ToB several times, I have much more skill with using spells, scrolls, and items than I did when I first played BG1, and they do indeed make the game a lot easier than it was in the past when I relied mostly on brute force. I think that playing BG2 opened up our minds to a lot of new possibilities, and fortunately, we can use that experience in a game like BG1. I mean, I could say that BG2 seems a lot easier than it used to, but that's more of a reflection on me than a reflection on the game. I figure the same thing applies to you. :)

I guess you could be partly right. Still, my ex and I calculated that I played BG1 over 1000 hours... And no, that's not why it didn't work out. I think. Well, maybe... :D

Re-playing the game enhances your skills and your ability to prepare for certain battles. Also, knowing more about the game itself e.g. the way your character's stats influence your performance, having chosen the right proficiencies for the right weapons  ... will all contribute to making the game easier. Certain enemies will remain difficult by their own right, but I find it becomes easier each time to defeat them, as you slowly learn more about their strengths and weaknesses.

I depends,
I started playing BG1 again after i just finished a solo game with a level 40(in almost every class) f/m/t.

Then, it takes a great time to realize that 10gibberlings can kill you!
I think it's all about strategy, no fight is hard when you use the right stratagy, in both BG1 ,BG2, IWD, and PS:T

But the first time BG1 i was inexperienced with RPG's, and then alot of fights are realy tough!!!
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

I forgot how weak I was, so there was a certain ammount of difficulty in that. I'm used to using the Infinity Engine now though, so maybe I'm more fluid in the game... and I know some things that work well at almost any level.

After playing through the game so many times, it's bound to get easier. It's kinda like practising a sport. When you're a rookie, everything's new and exciting. When you've become a veteran, you try and go beyond your original goal (in other words switching from a fighter type to a mage type).

minor spoilers...

after playing through BG2, i got BG1 from a friend of mine and after getting used to the fact that some goblin with a bow and an arrow can kill my mages with one shot, the game was easy... when i first played BG1 i had no idea about thac0, what 1d8 meant and so on and so forth, so i had no idea how to counter-act some spells, what spells are good, and who you should choose in your party, i didn't know squat. but that was actually the thrill, i remember having to load the half-orc in the nashkell mines about 20 times before getting out of there alive, and the mage in cloakwood about 50 times, since i wasn't able to hit those armored guy's, i hadn't found varscona, didn't have drizzt's weapons, i think i only had a +1 long sword for khalid, and the spiders bane for my main char

so after you know what to do, and where to do it, and how to answer to get the best results it gets easier naturally, and when you know what you're doing it helps more...

My party keeps crushing all in its way. Having a sixth level Mage with two Rings of Wiz is awesome - Dynaheir now has 20 Magic Missiles per day!

Another thing I've come to realise as I play the game once more, is that the paperdolls really look much better in BG1 than in BG2. Imoen is extremely cute, while in BG2 I think she looks almost grotesque. And Dynaheir is a babe, for sure... Anyone know if it's possible to use the BG1 paperdolls in BG2?

Can't help you out with the paperdolls, Astafas, but I had to comment on this. Ever tried a multi-player session (controlled by you) and importing the same Mage character with 2 Rings of Wizardry several times, then let them fire their Magic Missile at the same time? Talk about overkill ;)

He he, no I haven't. There actually are two Rings of Wiz in the game, so I don't feel like I'm cheating. Maybe cheesing a bit... :D

i created a MP party (currently on SoA):

ranger dualed to cleric at lvl 9 (pc)
paladin(undead hunter in SoA)
cleric/mage multi
illusionist/thief multi
transmuter
conjurer(sorc in SoA)

never had more than two mages at best when playing through bg1/Tosc so i decided to try out a mage overkill, it's remarkably easy to fireball/MM your way through everything without problems...
