About Time to Sell the Car
Australian sientists were able to teleport a laser beam. What do you think about it? It certanly has a lot of prospects, even though human transportation isn't an option yet.

I got no sense of any of the science behind it. It was simply a Lifestyle piece, in all the superficiality you might expect from that genre.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
@Vicsun: nice avatar, btw. I love wolves.
The only thing that struck me about the article - which I didn't expect to be that technical in the first place (it's CNN, what do you expect? It's the fast-food news service
) - is how it linked the achievement to the further development of quantum computers. Now that's interesting. Some of the basic technology behind the concept of quantum computers is already in use - new hard drive technology, which greatly expands storage - and to see another step in that direction is pretty cool, to me. You can surf Google to find info on quantum computers. From what I understand, a quantum computer, in theory, would be able to handle the astronomical computations necessary to construct material from the atomic level on up.
One thing I've noticed from human history - if the mind can conceive it, it can be achieved.

Here is BBC's report of the same thing, the article is identical since it is from Reuter's, but BBC has some nice links and a Q&A you can check.

It is strange that there is no mention of where the results are (or are going to be) published. I'll try to keep an eye for this appearing in the big scientific journals.

@Tamerlane: I see, then it will probably appear in the scientific press fairly soon after that.
It is strange that they choose to go to the "normal" press before the publish in the scientific press or present at an international meeting.
Normally you do it the other way around, since the most "prestigious" scientific journals require your results not to have been published in normal press or in other journals, in order to accept your papers...
Maybe this "reversed" order is more common in physcis...a pity Curdis is not here anymore, our in-house physicist who moved out in the wilderness.

Is the elections on the horizon?Originally posted by Tamerlane
Oh I blame the government for that one. They released the usual tirade of supporting science research and saying how Australia was now a leading country in this field of research.
I asked because I saw someone claim to have invented the internet for votes before.

Possibly a state one, however our Prime Minister has been copping a lot of critisicm for the manner in which he went in his recent US visit. Its a nice way to make the government look in control again.Originally posted by Weasel

tnx @ Chanak. That was my avatar ever since that option was available. I went to avatars.com and picked the first avatar I liked

I think that even though it won't have the star-treck application I still think it would be a great improvement. Practicly anything could be made wireless at any range...

Hmmm, I smell a rat... or should I say "Cold Fusion"? That was the last time a major scientific breaktrough got published in the normal media before being submitted (or should I say subjected) to peer reviewed journals. Now, that didn't turn out too well...

it does seem a bit strange that this has been released to the media first, but it does semm to have some serious practical implications, and i want a quantum computer
