Logging Off

Post by debszelda »

This technical issue is not related to any game...

...but when I log off my computer to log onto another user the computer goes into a shut down instead of relogging back in. :(

don't know how to correct this problem...or how it even occurred.
It was working just fine until this weekend.

Help is appreciated once again.

:)

I am not sure as to why it would do that but here is your avatar without the switch to "Lord of the Rings" :)

On the issue of your question, are you sure there are other users still active?

I created two users one is "momdad" and the other my daughter created "Carter". The "Carter" is no longer active and has been deleted off the system by going through "user" under control programs?

...but that is nothing new...we deleted that about a month or so ago.

btw I have Windows 98 SE

Seems like this has happened before but I can't remember how it got corrected.

I'm also having problems with my MSN messenger...its been a grrr :( eat weekend...it has been locking up and the only way I can get out of it has been by CON+ALT+DELing. I might try uninstalling and reinstalling to see if that gets corrected later on today.

My brother had the same problems, i believe the latest release is buggy, if possible it might be worth going back to an earlier version. Either that or it would be a problem at microsoft's end and it will probably resolve itself. Have you checked their site for patches?

As to your other problem, have you changed anything this week to make a difference, have you installed anything? I take it there are still other users then on the PC?

The only user the family uses now is just the momdad...I've thought about deleting that one but I'll probably loose everything and I don't want to do that.

The computer is not networked either, it is the only one in the house.

As for installing anything new, the previous weekend I installed a new screensaver program with Thomas Kinkade prints but wouldn't that be late for it to be acting up because it's been fine until just the past/recent weekend.

Thanks for the info on MSN...can't wait until I can get rid of it for good...its been a pain but that's what my telephone service goes through now.

I am not sure really, that shouldn't change anything. Looks like we might have to wait for one of the other experts, i am not familar with the "user" area anyway. Perhaps you can not just log off because there is no one else. However that doesn't make a lot of sense since this has only happened recently.

MSN is a cause of a great deal of exploits of individuals computers, there are many backdoor routes through MSN/IE integration, i could find relevant links if anyone wants them :)

That's certainly an unusual problem.
I assume you're using windows user profiles? If so, your best option may be to remove any old or unused profiles. I have found the profile system in win98 to be a bit unstable, so if you're planning on having just the one profile it may not be worth the time trying to fix this issue. you shouldn't lose any data by removing the profiles other than some start menu items and desktop settings.

Otherwise I'd recommend checking a few settings:

1. What network logon option are you using? It will most likely be either the windows logon or microsoft family logon. You can check this in the network properties page. If neither of these logon options are installed that may be the problem, as windows simply cannot display the logon dialog box.

2. Start the computer in safe mode and remove the advanced power management driver. It will be redetected on startup and windows will replace the driver. The reason for this is the power management is partly tied into the startup and shutdown sequences and may be issuing the wrong command when you use the shutdown button fromt he start menu.

3.. Get any available driver updates to the motherboard. Specifically non-intel chipsets.

Hope this helps. I've had a good look through the microsoft knowledge base and technet and they have no references to this problem.
