actually, one of the sixth form toilet cubicle's locking mechanism broke about a month ago, and ever since then chewing gum was used to keep it shut

@CE, actually it is usually referred to as "Chewing Gum" rather than adding the extra word, it is similar in many ways to "the previous day i had had a rectal exam..." one could just say the previous day i had a rectal exam, however many authors will use the extra word for no reason. There is a term in English for such things, i can't recall what it is though :o

Wriggleys Extra's for me :)

LOL. Yeah sleep is right. I could say 'I am using chewing gum', but then it isn't clear what I am using it for; Chewing gum has many uses, as Robnark has kindly demonstrated :D .
If I just say 'I am chewing gum' however, it is clear that I am not actually a stick of mint-based confectionary, and it is also clear that I am not chewing, for example, xantham gum. There is only one type of gum which is chewed (chewing gum), and hence the sentence can only be interpreted in one way (exceptional circumstances excepted of course ;) . Class dismissed.

@Sleep. Saying 'the previous day I had a rectal exam*' means that you were examined rectally the day before. 'the previous day I had had a rectal exam' means that the day before, you had experienced (on an unspecified day) a rectal exam at some point in your life. Think of the sentence 'I have a violin exam' the past tense of this sentence is 'I had a violin exam'. The sentence 'I had had a violin exam' on the other hand is not the same. It is the past tense of the sentence 'I have had a violin exam'. With the addition of 'the previous day', the first example becomes specific as to time, whereas the second does not. Detention over.

EDIT - @Sleep, what's a rectal exam by the way?

Personally i consider it bad grammar, the sentence in question can be constructed differently to fulfill the same end product and with a great deal of finesse ;)

Rectal exam would be an examination one's rectum, in laymans terms ones ass ;)

ROFL :D :D :D

@Sleep and Frogus: "I am chewing gum", ok, you use chewing as both a adjective and a verb is this sentence. To me it sounds a bit funny, because in Swedish translation that would mean I'm chewing on a condom. :D

Regarding "rectal exam" - wouldn't that be an school exam of rectal knowledge, or can exam be used as short for examination = investigation? Great example sentence btw - how do you come up with these things, Sleep :D

*sigh* I think English is one of the easiest languages to pick up at a basic level, and one of the most difficult to master correctly at an advanced level. :(

One in theory could use the trem "rectal exam" as a describing word, for instance "that was one hell of a rectal exam" in other words the exam wasn't particularly enjoyable. It could also be used as both of your examples.

How do i come up with these things? I guess it is skill ;)

@Frogus, BTW it's censored not "sensored" (score one for sleep  ) if i can't defeat you with properly constructed sentences then i will instead resort to petty correction of spelling :D

I actually meant to say "...be an examination of one's rectum" :)

Oh and don't over use the word ass, that would only cause it to end up on the censored list, then we would have no one to blame but the abusers of that word.
