Hiya
I saw this Wild Mage mentioned in the BG2: Throne of Bhaal ad.
Does any of you AD&D-knowing people care to enlighten me?

Wild mages are one of those "weird" classes that most DMs (IMHO) don't necessarily like to introduce in their campaign as a playable class (unless it's a campaign with an experienced group of players).Originally posted by Xandax:

They were originally introduced in the Tome of Magic as a kind of specialist wizard. Wild mages cast spells based on pure randomness and chaos (hence wild magic). Wild mages have to roll each time a spell is cast to see if a wild surge occurs (can't remember the exact roll). If one occurs, effects can vary anywhere from 200% boost in spell effectiveness to causing yourself or your target to leave giant sized footprints for the next several weeks. Most wild surge effects are more weird than they are effective. In any case, if a wild surge occurs, unless you roll a spell multiplier, the spell is effectively lost.
Now, while wild surges may be a limitation, there are a lot of wild magic spells that are pretty neat (unfortunately none come to mind offhand).
Wild mages also have a percentage chance to actually control a wand of wonder or draw a chosen card from a deck of many things. Considering the randomness of those powerful items, that's a great benefit.
And, if I recall, I don't believe wild mages have any opposition schools.
