In the beginning of the game you have to "register" you character - you then get three choices to generate you class. First you can answer some questions and the game will assign your class according to your answers. Second, you can choose a standard class. Third, you can make a custom class.

Making a custom class allow you to choose your attributes and major and minor skills. You can choose any combination that you would like - you get certain racial bonuses so this factors in as well.

You can basically make any type character that you can imagine.

For more info on character generation go to the morrowind part of the gamebanshee site and click on "excel spreadsheet" under the character generation heading. This spreadsheet organizes all of your options thoroughly.

Creating a "custom class" means nothing more than selecting your primary, major, and minor skills. Since each skill derives from an attribute, your character's attributes are affected by these choices. To an even greater extent, attributes are affected by your race. You also get to choose your character's sex, and birth sign, which usually carries an advantage (and occasionally, a penalty). That's it. :)
