I went south down the river, swam down it until I hit some islands, then gave up. I heard you can spot them by seeing people by a campfire on the right as you go south down the river. Never saw em.
I sure hope that the game gets less tedious as it goes on... Seems I spend waaayyy too much time trying to find places.

go south out of town but dont cross the bridge. follow river to your right till you see a bridge. as soon as you see bridge turn right and up against the hillside there is the mines and the camp you speak of.
