Diplomacy
Diplomacy
In the risk thread it looked like some people were interested in a diplomacy game here at SYM. I dont have any experience with Dip online, so if anyone have a better suggestion then one person taking care of everything and the players send PMs to him then please speak up.
I could manage this if noone else likes to do it, but in that case it would be nice if someone else managed a second game, since I rather much like to play aswell. If, ofcourse there is enough interest.

Maybe I'm not up to date on this one, but WTF IS "Diplomacy Online " ???Originally posted by Dottie

....and what is DIPLOMACY ? Is it a kind of game or do you mean DIPLOMACY as in "giving C0cktailparties, smile a lot, get bribed by the Weapons Lobby and then start declaring wars at each other" ?
No worries, maybe I'm just dense....

First item is the official manual in downloadable PDF format. Kudos to Hasbro for offering it free of charge. You can find strategy, tips, and software tools on the site as well.
Not necessary, but a nice tool:

Not terribly intuitive, but this program allows you to track games, plan moves, and of course adjudicate turns.
Everything linked here is free, but out of fairness I'll plug the original board game as worthwhile purchase for those interested.

I'm downloading it now. I tried to get the real game (it only costs about 8 quid), but it looks to have gone out of big stocks and is currently unavailable on amazon.co.uk so I'll have to do with this one. I may yhave some trouble figuring it out (Waverly and Korny said it was tricky if you've not done it before) anyway Kornflake askied me to tell you all to count him in if you're hosting. He's out of town (or something) at the moment but is interested and has Waverly's download...so that's five at least IIRC...

Diplomacy:
From the last thread, these are the people I suspect are interested:
Korn
Ned
Timekeeper (maybe, he expressed interest but didn’t say he was in)
Aegis
Frogus (looked like another maybe)
Dottie
CM
Nippy
I’ll volunteer to adjudicate and manage the game. First order of business is to confirm who is in. We need 7 players and have 8 possible interested SYMians. Would the above people please confirm? If all 8 are definite, I think the best course of action is first come first serve, in the order people spoke up in the original thread.
Anyone not experienced must read the official rules: http://www.hasbro.com/instruct/Diplomacy.PDF
I’ll be happy to answer questions, but not if you were too lazy to RTFM
Anyone not familiar with how the rules apply to internet play should read: http://devel.diplom.org/Email/newbie.html
In simplest terms, the same rules apply but negotiations are via email and orders are submitted to me by email before an agreed upon deadline. Again RTFM. I’ll keep a ‘low-spam’ thread for news, maps, press, trash talk, and comments from the peanut gallery.
For more advanced help, follow the links that Dottie quoted. First link will get you strategy discussions and other tools, 2nd link is a freeware program that acts as an electronic board. You will be able to strategize using the maps I provide, however many find it is useful to be able to move units around to test out moves using a program or other board.

Better count me out for a now Waverly, I'm having trouble getting to grips with the rules, as my browser wont load up the link you've given us...however I will try and get at them another way, or if someone can attach a nice text document of them that'd be great...for now I am trying to reverse engineer from the game interface so I might'nt have the hang of it for a while yet...

Experiencing technical difficulties:
Frogus
The rules are in PDF form. Make sure you have Adobe Acrobat installed somewhere. And no, it isn't plaintext bit it is copywrite material, so we can't post it.

@Beldin - Diplomacy is a board game with a map of Europe as the board. There are seven different colours, each representing one of the 'Great Powers' in 1900 ie England, Russia, France, Italy, Turkey, Austria and Germany. The main point of the game is that the combat system is simple and involves no luck (2 armies beat 1 etc) and therefore everything is decided on how you negotiate with other players - Diplomacy.
