2001: a space odyssey

Post by Morlock »

The only thing I didn't understand about this movie was everything, so this shouldn't take long.

To be more specific- I have put off seing the movie forever, but finaly decided to see it a couple of days ago. I didn't understand any of it, and I am normaly very good at understanding movies.

first- what was the UN shaped pillar that (I think) was the base of the movie?

second- why were the apes in it for so long?

third- why is there very little dialague in the movie?

forth- why did he all of a sudden start seing the light and stuff?

fifth- where was the room he got to?

sixth- Were the two guys there him in makeup?

seventh- whats the point/message of the baby?

eighth- do I sound very stupid for all of these questions? :(

TO CONTRAST THE SLOWNESS OF HUMAN BIOLOGICAL EVOLUTION WITH THE RAPID ADVANCE OF HUMAN TECHNOLOGICAL EVOLUTION-- MEANING THAT WITH SCIENCE WE ABANDON OUR GODS AND BECOME HEATHENS

third- why is there very little dialague in the movie?TO ADD SUSPENSE AND REDUCE DISTRACTIONS TO PURE THOUGH, TO FOCUS THE VIEWER ON THE CONTEMPLATION OF THE MAIN TENANTS OF THE MOVIE (I.E. RELIGION IS WRONG, BUT THEISM IS NECESSARY)

forth- why did he all of a sudden start seing the light and stuff?
HE WAS REDISCOVERING HIS CHRISTIANITY AND SAW THE LIGHT OF GOD WHICH REMINDED HIM OF HIS SINS AGAINST HIS RACE

fifth- where was the room he got to?
A SYMBOL OF THE INFANT IN THE WOMB (INNOCENCE RETURNED TO)

sixth- Were the two guys there him in makeup?
(SYMBOLS OF THE SPERM WHO IMPREGNATED HIS MOTHER IN THE NAME OF RELIGION)

seventh- whats the point/message of the baby?
EVENTUALLY WE ALL REGRESS, AS TIME TRAVELS BACKWARD THE MORE WE ADVANCE- ALL PROGRESS IS AN ILLUSION- AND LUNCHTIME DOUBLY SO

eighth- do I sound very stupid for all of these questions? :(

Almost all details in movies can be interpretated - and thusly over-interpretated. The only "true" interpretation is that of the person thinking up the stuff - and thus I'd count on Kubrik to have a lot to do with it as it was him and Athur C. Clake that made the screenplay on a base of a Clake short story.

Much of the movie has imo (and notice - imo) to do with the evolution (evolvement(sp?)) of mankind - I base this on "Also Spracth Zarathusta" in union with the apes, AI (HAL), and a lot of other stuff.

As for the amount of dialog, it seems to be a "Kubrik thing" - as far as I remember, "Apocalypse Now" also had a low amount of dialog and (as far as I remember) "A Clockwork Orange" and "Eyes Wide Shut" also features less then usual dialog.

As for your last question - well that is for you to decide.

Well- I kinda assumed it was gonna be about evolution- because of the apes. (I always think of Fatboy Slim's clip "right here right now")

I think out of all his movies, Dr. Strangelove or how I and all that stuff, was the best by a long shot. It had good satire good actors a good script and it wasn't up for interpatation. The ony wierd things about the movie (IIRC) is the General who's paranoid about the fluids, Dr. Strangelove himself (I'm still not sure why thwey named he movie after him) and the fact that the world ends.

@Morlock: I'm a bit in a hurry right now, but in this thread there is a discussion about the end of 2001 that might clarify some things.

The monolite clearly symbolises man's consciousness, when it comes to the hominids they start using tools and they get language. So whatever you think man's higher consciousness is, that's the monolithe.
