Greatest British Album Ever

what is the best British album ever made? I need to know what you all think after being disgusted by an internet based poll of the same question recently...and please noone post really obscure records just for the sake of impressing everyone else. I'm sure someone will know more about music than you, so lets not make it a contest of who has the indiest taste. But be honest, and if you all think it's Sgt. Pepper's then that's fine

rolling stones - beggars banquet
The Who - Who's Next
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold as Love (technically, an American, I believe he did all of his recordings in England; does this count?)
Beatles - Revolver
Pink Floyd - Animals (this probably gets my nod)
Steel Pulse - Handsworth Revolution
Cream - Disraeli Gears
The Moody Blues - In search of the Lost Chord

There really isn't much out there for music that impressed me in the 80's, 90's, and 00's. Too bad I wasn't born or was just a pup for the stuff I do listen to. Ah hell, all I'm doing is listing my faves by band. I guess I'll give it to Pink Floyd - Animals; the album is a masterpiece.

First of all, I think you have to disqualify greatest hits albums, boxed sets, compilations, live albums and omnibus collections. There's something about an album that was created in a moment during an artist's or band's career that should be considered for a poll like this. A greatest hits album that spans 25 years just isn't fair. Having said that, here are my picks (because I'm too wishy-washy to pick just one):

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

Queen - Night at the Opera

John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton

If I can only have one (and I'm not allowed to have something obscure like David Allen and the Gong) that's the one.

Although I think Bowie - Diamond Dogs deserves an honourable mention.

@Ned Flanders - Very little of Hendrix's studio work was done in England. However 'Are you Experienced' & 'Axis Bold as Love' were both recorded in London and as he only released three albums while he lived it does give the impression that this was a majority of his studio recorded work. - Curdis !

When I answer questions of this type, "greatest xxx ever", I usually think not only of what I like, but also consider what impact a work has had within or outside it's area. So my candidate is David Bowie - Ziggy stardust. (Although I personally like Diamond dogs better.)

Do Irish bands count towards "British albums"? This may be touchy for both the Irish and the Brits, but if they do count, you have to throw in U2's The Joshua Tree.

Far TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many... I guess 6 out of my 10 favorite bands are british, but if I had to pick one british album I would pick one with "British" in the title...

BRITISH STEEL by Judas Priest - one of the most solid albums I know, where every single song is rated A or more.

IMO, of course.

Of my own personal taste it would have to be The Wall , closely followed by Vision Thing (Sisters of Mercy) and Different Class (Pulp) since I do not have a least favourite song off any of these albums. Also running close is Animals (Pink Floyd) but even though I have everything they have done, I am not a Dark Side of The Moon fan

If I was to consider albums that are not necessarily my favourites, but are considered instrumental in defining British rock/pop in their time, I would have to vote (in no particular order) Rumours/Tusk (Fleetwood Mac), Tommy (The Who), Never Mind The ........ (S*x Pistols), White Album (Beatles) oh! there are loads!
