ANH was built on classic fairy-tale and literature archtypes and is essentially an "into the woods" story. There is certainly nothing original about the story; you can trace its origins back through direct cinematic ancestors (Akira Kurosawa's films in particular) and other stories. What was substantive about ANH is that it was a fresh take on the story; substituting outer space for the black forest, light sabers for swords and the Force for medieval magicks.

I wonder if a movie of it's type will ever be created again, the film industry was in a kind of slump at that point (If i am correct

) and all Star Wars did was capitalise on the rather poor industry of the time IMO. I purchased all the merchandise myself, i even bought some of the rather lame excuse for action figures

Perhaps i should try to recall what it was like when i was a wee one, but at the moment, i can be nothing but cynical about the entire franchise

Side note: doesn't Darth Tyranus, sound a bit riduculous, it's like calling him "Darth evil bad guy", it sounds like some kind of camp theatrical name to me, i will keep expecting someoen to shout "Oh no he isn't" all the way through the movie

LMAO, you could do it yourself, but you might get thrown out

I think being called Darth anything is enough to label someone as a bad guy anyway

But there were people who bought all the TPM merchandise, and went to see it again and again. Still, I can't see many people aspiring to be Anakin

I think Sleep and HLD are right on. If SW:ANH were to come out in theatres for the first time today, I wouldn't be very impressed with any of it (except for the special effects which would be up to date). But how do you define 'up to date'. Most of today's special's effects are computer generated; I feel that the hard work the lucas crew put into their special effects 25 years ago are far more impressive. Are they more visually stunning; of course not, but they certainly required more work and more manpower (too any of you computer graphics buffs out there, this is not a knock against you).

Back to the point...when I watch SW:ANH now, I no longer am the same 30 year old; I sort of watch the movie through memories. Other places I had been where I remember watching it in the past.

If people want to shred TPM , they might as well go back to Return of the Jedi. After they rescued Han from Pizza the Hut (is the Sarlaac pit not one of the most vivid images in cinematic history, next to pinhead of course), that movie sucked. the ewoks were the worst. gotta go. cutting it short, more later.

So what do you think of the digitally remastered special FX of the original trilogy? I own the non-remastered version, and when I watch it, the FX don't stick out as being really outdated, unlike some 80s movies.

Speaking of which, did you know Tron has been released on DVD?

@Georgi,

I own both versions of SW:ANH. The effects seem a little improved. Star Wars just impressed me with the blaster effects being a monkey wrench banged on a telephone pole in the desert. Little minature ships used on backdrops for effects. That ingenuity is just awesome. so many people, so much precision. It's just cooler to me. Again, I'm old.

i think the creatures really lose soemthing when they are the computer generated ones. the jabba's in the edited New Hope and in Phantom Menace looked like retards.

think about it...today, chewbacca would be just an image, there's just somethign wrong with that, and yoda as anything but a muppet is wrong as well.
the graphics still just aren't there to give it the right feel as to actually being there.

a small rant about phantom menace...for the most part i enjoyed it, i laughed hysterically at how George made fun of every race on earth. i wasn't even all that bothered by jar jar (yes, he needs to die) but the thing that KILLED the movie for me was how HORRIBLE that kid playing anakin was. my god, he was so bad. that's the character they should have made computer generated.

I always thought they missed an opportunity by not feeding Jabba's lard ass to the Sarlacc.

The original Star Wars movies hold up perfectly well today. I like the Special Editions mainly because they have extra scenes. One thing that bothers me about ANH SE is when Greedo gets a shot off and Han dodges before shooting him. The original had Solo shooting him under the table. That was one of Solo's defining moments, and as far as I'm concerned, Han shot first.

"Tron" is an interesting fantasy/gladiator movie. The setting for most of the movie--sort of like a futuristic city at night time--is nothing short of spectacular, and the plot is quite distinctive. Imagine, a man having to risk his life by playing dangerous video games in a strange new world in order to get back his OWN video game software that was stolen from him. I had to see it a couple times before I understood everything said in the movie, though. They pass that computer terminology by rather quickly in those conversations. Nevertheless, "Tron" is still a pretty cool movie.

Yeah, I thought they should have kept Han shooting first. It's not like anyone would miss from that far away, so having Greedo shoot first was just plain stupid.

Christopher Lee also played the voice of Death in the Discworld cartoons.
