Well they had to give it something, given that it was scandalously omitted from the nominations for best film and director...

I hear the Hollywood buzz is that LotR is going to get Best Picture *crosses fingers*

BTW, here's a question for all those people who say the Academy don't like fantasy movies - name a recent fantasy movie that deserved to win? I can't think of any myself...

Willow was definitely my favorite movie growing up (second to "Spaceballs," another under-rated film). But Willow was what introduced me to fantasy, and eventually to the D&D worlds, because soon after I watched the movie, I was compelled to read the Hobbit, then Lord of the Rings, then Dragonlance, then Forgotten Realms, then Wheel of Time, then...

I have to agree, it is definately a starter in the fantasy world for most people, it of course brought about the wonder of Ron Howard

There is a great link between Hollywood and the fantasy genre, look at all the stars that are linked or have starred in fantasy movies, i think that this year The Oscars should acknowledge this and make LotR Best Picture (as much as i didn't like it

I personally think that LotR should win Best Picture because (and I know this is kind of radical...) it's the best film nominated

(I saw A Beautiful Mind today, and I can't say I was overly impressed. Have seen all the Best Picture nominees now.)

I was actually watching a film the other day with a young Christian Bale and Christopher Lee as well, does anyone remember the name of that?

No no, I admit that Willow is a good movie, but you see what I mean about Oscar-worthy fantasy films being few and far between?

Hmmm, well the only film I can think of with a young Christian Bale in it is Empire of the Sun... but Christopher Lee isn't in that.
Edit: think I found the one you mean, it's called The Land of Faraway, but I haven't seen it.

Sounds about right

It is not particularly great so i wouldn't exactly reccommend it

They show it on sky all the time but in the middle of the day, i have seen the last 15 minutes about 20 times now "To The Pain!"

I saw princess bride wen it came out, and I looked and looked but couldn't find it anywhere untill a couple of months ago.
Anyway, for years the only parts I remembered were (predictably) "My name is Enigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die"- a true classic, and of course the seen with the poison. I always remembered how the guy was laughing, then all of a sudden dropped dead.
That was Cary Elwes' best performance IMO. He was good in Robin hood MIT(SP)- one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, but he was realy bad in Twister and Liar,Liar.

On a totaly different note, does anyone know the name of the book on which Steven Spielberg's new film is going to be about?
A bit more detail: the movie's name is "Catch me if you can", set to be released late 2002, staring Leonardo Decaprio and Tom Hanks.
It is an autobiography of a guy whose name, (I think) is Frank something, who was a con-artist from the time he was 16, and is now working with the FBI.
I wanted to get the book, because if its enough to impress Steven Spielberg, (My idol) I'm with it.

Well ok, it could be worse, maybe I just saw the trailer for Minority Report the other day and it looks like an excuse for lots of special FX with no plot, so I'm not feeling especially charitable towards Mr Spielberg currently.

Since this seems to have turned into a random movie thread, I have a question... Why do people feel the need to remake classic movies and completely ruin them?!? Stop it already!! And why do they always star Viggo Mortensen?

(Ok, so I'm watching a remake of Vanishing Point (great movie) and it's turned into some daft romantic thing about a guy trying to get home to his pregnant wife.

And what's worse, Jason Priestley is in it! Noooo!)

? IMO he is a genius, and you know, he did make some movies before AI ad MR.
I think he is a positive role model for me- a nice jewish boy grows up to become the richest person in showbiz, he's directed quite a few good movies. plus a few mazing ones and he's produced at least three times a many movies.
Seven of the top twenty grossing films were by made by him.
