I saw the last few minutes. CANADA WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The American refs were soooooooooo biased against us. 13 Canadian penalties!
But we still won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YAY!
BTW, Russia's threatening to pull out because:
-they think Sale and Pelletier shouldn't have gotten a gold (the Russian judges are indirectly connected with the controversy)
-the hockey refs (IIRC their game against the Czeks), they ARE playing US next
-their 9-time gold medalist cross-country skiier had an extremely high red-blood cell count (caused by dope)
They could be bluffing...

Well, when you break the rules, they blow the whistle. Two minute minor. It is a lot of penalties though.
Congrats to Les Habitants, a well deserved victory.
Also Gaxx, what do you mean (caused by dope). Doping is just a reference to any and all substances considered illegal by a particular group, in this case the USADA.
It appears she had high levels of hemoglobin in her blood before a pre race blood test. I heard something on the radio this evening that the high hemoglobin count is due to the fact she menstrating right now. That may be a little too much detail. sorry, and I have no idea if this is a valid claim.

Crush enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the women.

My wife told me that she took a normal blood test before the skiing event and her hemoglobin count was low (which is apparently a pretty normal condition during menstruation) and that the officials would not let her compete until it went up. She came back a couple of hours later and her hemoglobin had not only gone up, but had gone off the scale.Originally posted by Ned Flanders

My wife (who is a nurse) says that she probably went somewhere and got a blood transfusion. According to her explaination, someone's hemoglobin count fluctuates during menstruation normally, but not to the extreme level hers went to. The two obvious ways to get the count up are through drugs or a blood transfusion (which her team doctor probably told her would raise the count to a normal level), both of which are against the rules, so she was disqualified.

Ya, poor russians, they've got nothing going for them.
As to the Canadian women playing rough, ITS HOCKEY. Not exactly an elegant sport, though it has its moments.
13 penalties is ridicolous, especially over piddly things like delay of game and bumping. Its the (or was til we won) the gold medal match, let things go so we get a good game. I think canada was a women down for half the game...
As for Belarous, hehehe, GO GREZTKY GO!
Go Canada GO!!

The waves came crashing in like blindness.
So I just stood and listened.

Congratulations to the Canadian and British (Scots) ladies
Both teams were fair and deserving winners
The Russians have complained not only about unfair judging towards their team, but also against other teams like Korea. Did any of you see the men's 1500 m speed skating, where the Korean winner was disqualified for moving into the line of the American? In speed skating, you are not allowed to touch another skater, and you are not allowed to block another skaters line. At slow motion pictures, you can clearly see the American coming up on the inside of the Korean, touching his arm and then throwing his own arms up in the air although the Korean did not move. A very controversial decision.
In women's freestyle, the Russian was judged 4th, although she made a perfectly clean run. In men's halfpipe, a Finnish competitor recieved very low marks although he made a perfect run with high difficulty. And the ladies figure skating yesterday was no less a judging scandal than the pairs event. But media don't seem to focus a lot on controversial judging when North Americans win and athletes from other nations are the victims.
However, the Russian complaints about the women's ski relay was of course not that Lazutina was not allowed to start, their complaints was that the tests were taken 1 h before competition, whereas you have to report changes in the team 2 h before competition. So they complained about not getting a chance to replace Lazutina with another skier.
I think the Russians have now decided to stay in the games, after some contact between Putin and Rougge(sp?).Originally posted by Obsidian

I saw over on ESPN.com that the Russians are protesting Sarah Hughes's gold medal claiming that they were the victims of "subjective judging" and that Irina Slutskaya should be awarded a co-gold medal because they did it for the Canadians.
Makes you wonder if they're just complaining to make a point or if the non-North American bias thing is real (of course a lot of the stink about the Canadians was generated by NBC and the media, who paid big bucks to show the Olympics and would like nothing more than to have everyone talking about it for weeks and weeks; but wait! That would mean that the Olympics are really about ratings and money and not about the althetes and everyone knows that's not true).

Well i think Canada should have those refs checked up on and then fired.Originally posted by Gaxx_Firkraag
The Russian had taken some sort of drugs...
The refs were biased against us. We were a little more aggressive, but the refs were pretty much picking on Canada. The players thought the officiating was atrocious.

I find it highly strange that the ISU has rejected the Russian claims, whereas they quickly made things happen after the Canadian claim in the pairs skating. Yesterday, I thought the Russian claims of being unfairly treatned were highly exaggregated, but after having seen the ladies figure skating and the hockey semi final today, I start wondering if the Russians are right.Originally posted by HighLordDave

EDIT: I just read that the Korean protest against the disqualification of their speed-skater was also rejected without further investigation. This although some of the other competitors, among them the 4-time European champion who participated in the same race, has also protested the disqualification openly calling the judgement a scandal and a blow to the sport?
