Here are my picks, with the old Siskel & Ebert trick of picking who should win the award as opposed to who will win it:

Best Picture
A Beautiful Mind (will win)
Lord of the Rings (should win)

Best Director
Ron Howard, A Beautiful Mind (will)
Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings (should)

Best Actress
Sissy Spacek, In the Bedroom (will, should)

Best Actor
Sean Penn, I Am Sam (will, should)

Best Supporting Actress
Maggie Smith, Gosford Park (will)
Marisa Tomei, In the Bedroom (should)

Best Supporting Actor
Ben Kingsley, Sexy Beast (toss-up will)
Ian McKellen, Lord of the Rings (toss-up will, should)

Best Animated Film (New Category)
Shrek (will, should)

Best Original Screenplay
Memento (will, should)

Best Adapted Screenplay
In the Bedroom (will)
The Lord of the Rings (should)

Disclaimer: I have not seen all of the movies that were nominated, I'm making my picks based on what I've heard from reasonably reputable movie critics and my friends who are cinema buffs.

The Oscar field is pretty thin this year, so I can easily see three or four movies (A Beautiful Mind, Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, Moulin Rouge, In the Bedroom) taking the majority of the major awards.

You can find a complete list at Oscar.com (actually the list isn't complete; it's just the major awards--those that will be televised live on prime time).

There is another story about it at cnn.com.

Yes!

My hero, John Williams was nominated Twice in the same category!
For best original score for A.I and Harry Potter.
In my opinion none of the scores this year were amazing, but Harry Potter's was the best, despite the fact that I am usualy partial towards LoTR.

I've just seen "Moulin Rouge", and I must say, its much better than I thougt it would be.
I was expecting a very weird movie, with weird characters and bad music.
The start was weird, but once you get into it, you don't notice it after a while.
The music is great. They have songs by David Bowie, U2, the Beatles, Madona, Elton John, Fatboy Slim and many more.
Also Placido Domingo, one of the three tenors sings in one of the songs.
Nicole Kidman has an amazing voice.

It is simply a cute movie with great music.

Fact is that over the past 20 years, the picture nominated for the most oscars has won the Best Picture award 18 out of 20 times.
Favors LoTR. :)

I think the demographics are different this year, since if you look at all the categories you will see that the 5 nomination lead that LoTR has- are all in technical categories in which a Beutiful mind (BM) isn't nominated. This means that LoTR could win some or all of these 5, and then be even with BM.
Example:"the Matrix" won 4 oscars in technical categories, but wasn't even nominated in any of the 5 leading categories.
I think that history says that BM is gonna win Best picture, actor and writer.

As a side note, last week I wanted to go out to see a movie, and couldn't find anything interesting. In the next 2 weeks A Beutiful mind, Gosford park, I am Sam, In the bedroom, Monsters Inc., Black Hawk down, The man who wasn't there and Mullholand drive- are all coming out.
Needless to say, my presence here shall decrease significantly.

A Beutiful mind

I saw this last night, and I was expecting more from this movie.
This is a movie that again, like Moulin Rouge, I would not recommend it for most male teen-agers, they would simply not find something atractive about it- except of course for the absolutely Beutiful Jennifer Connoly as Russel Crowes wife.
A very short summery of the movie: The life and trials of John F. Nash (Russel Crowe) - a brillient Mathematician who develops Scizofrenia (Totaly wrong spelling, I know).
Director Ron Howard (Apollo 13, The Grinch, The Paper) sent a letter to the press asking them not to divulge more than the basic setting for the plot, which I also recommend that everyone else who sees the movie should not reveal the plot- it would totaly ruin the movie.

Specific things I would like to point out:
1. The makeup is not done very well, it is not relative with the character's age.
2.Russel Crowe gives a great performece, but the character he plays has a very annoying way of speaking- which is a bit of a turn-off.
I think he does deserve the oscar, but I'm still routing for Tom Wilkinson (In the bedroom)- I didn't see the movie- but I loved him in other movies: "The Full Monty", "The patriot"- he played General Cornwallis, and "Shakespeare in love"- he played the sponser of the play brilliantly.
3.Ed Harris (The Truman show, The Rock and many others) was great in this movie, I just wish he would play a lead character once in a while.
4.I loved the guy who played Nash's roommate- he was in "A knights tale"- he played the naked guy.

I still think this movie will take in best picture, director, acter, suppoting actress- despite the fact that I want LoTR to win.

LOL :D "The naked guy", aka Geoffrey Chaucer ;) Paul Bettany was definitely the best thing in A Knight's Tale. And incidentally I read an interview with him recently and he stated and went on to ignore the fact that he wasn't supposed to talk about specific parts of A Beautiful Mind :D

I saw In The Bedroom last weekend, Tom Wilkinson's performance was excellent, as were Sissy Spacek and Marisa Tomei. But I wasn't that impressed by the movie itself - definitely not a frontrunner for Best Picture, in my mind. And I still think Russell Crowe will take Best Actor.

And the winners are...

Well, the BAFTAs (British Academy Awards) took place tonight, here's a round-up of the winners:

Best British Film - Gosford Park
Best Cinematography - The Man Who Wasn't There
Best Adapted Screenplay - Shrek
Best Original Screenplay - Amelie
Best Foreign Language Film - Amores Perros
Best Music - Moulin Rouge!
Audience Film of the Year Award - LotR (as voted for by the public)
Best Supporting Actress - Jennifer Connelly for A Beautiful Mind
Best Supporting Actor - Jim Broadbent for Moulin Rouge
Best Actress - Judi Dench for Iris
Best Actor - Russell Crowe for A Beautiful Mind
Best Director - Peter Jackson for LotR
Best Film - LotR

Good night for LotR :) (it also took the awards for special FX and hair and make-up...) It's not often that the BAFTAs set the precedent for the Oscars though...

The first douzen times I saw it (L.A Confeidential,I realy love that movie) I didn't notice it either, but once Gladiator came out and I found out he was Australian, I saw the movie again and noticed his accent slipping.
