Who else saw the Canadians get hosed last night?
I heard unconfirmed reports that in response to the undeserved gold medal the Russians won in the pairs figure skating last night, RCMPs have cordoned off the Russian and French embassies in Ottawa to stave off massive demonstrations by enraged Canadian citizens. There were also alleged incidents of Olympic figure skating judges receiving dozens of prank pizza deliveries well after midnight in Salt Lake City--each one piled high with Canadian bacon.

It's always a rig job
11 consecutive golds now. The judging is so biased it's ridiculous. The judges know the skaters and the routines before they hit the even so they are fairly swayed already on what programs they like and who they'll cast a first place vote for.
It kind of sucks I watched the Olympics last night for three hours last night (I always watch the figure skating pairs) only to see the second place team take home the gold.
I mean, if you're the only pair to finish your program without ice shavings on one of your asses, you should win. Most programs were comprable in difficulty. Additionally, the Canadians chose a good piano concerto for their theme music. I find piano concertos the best music selection for the figure skating. They just meld well to me.

Crush enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the women.
well i dont know about you but i sure smelled a conspiracy last night (either that or it was my brother dirty socks
) the judging was completley f***ed up. (there is really no other word to describe it) the russians made several mistakes in their performance, where as the Canadians made none. plus the Canadians really got the crowd going..... to bad most of the judges seemed to be deaf and blind. i wonder how much money they (the judges) got? a couple thousand each?

I'm no expert on Olympic figure skating (and if I were, I wouldn't admit it), but there have been several scandals dealing with the judges in the recent past. I think it was in Nagano that there were allegations that the judges had been getting together for years with some national quid pro quo (East German judge to Soviet judge: "I'll put your guy second, if you do us that way").
Plus for at least the last 20 years, the Olympic medals have been more lifetime achievement awards than who puts on the best performance that year.
All you have to do is watch the tape of the Russian girl after the scores were announced to see that she knew that she didn't deserve the gold medal; the Canadians did.

It seems worse when the judges are not available for any comment. It wouldn't be a proper Olympics without a major controversy.
I believe the summer games in Seoul had the US boxer getting hosed by the judges.
I feel bad for the skaters. Their Olympic experience is tarnished, and I wonder if they will ever be able to look back fondly on it.

Maybe Russia won because its whole dance stuff was more classical, not as contemporary as Canada's. I've heard that one.
Also some others say that the Russian couple has a good reputation, not that the Canadians have a bad one, they just don't have one really as yet.
Apparently the Russian couple has won a few other championships and are quite famous.

But their reputations should not have any bearing on the medal results last night, nor should their fame nor their past achievements. The Russians made errors. The Canadians did not. The pair that put forth the best performance last night did not win.
This is the reason why people think so poorly of the Winter Olympics which are riddled with sports with subjective scoring. Of course, it's not that the Summer Olympics are much better; it just seems like many of the Summer events are scored based on objective criteria (like time and distance, although sports like gymnastics have lots of style elements), and the judges don't have long-standing reputations of harbouring favourites.

I think I saw Aegis on the news trying to slap the Russian ambassador with a Canadian freshwater salmon but the RCMP managed to restrain him before he could do any serious damage.
"Yeah, some kid came at the ambassador with a half-cooked salmon steak," one of the Mounties reported. "He smelled like Cobalt Blue and was quite upset. It's a good thing the ruskie was drunk too or he might have pressed charges. Folks just need to remember that it's just a sport and the Olympics are aboot having fun, eh. It's not like we lost to the ruskies at hockey or lacrosse."
There were further unconfirmed reports that even the Quebecois were so livid that they were conducting a seance in hopes of raising John Candy from the dead to exact a horrible vengeance upon the figure skating judges.
An anonymous Canadian government source said they were preparing to deploy their secret weapon against the French, Russians, Ukranians and Chinese: at midnight tonight, NORAD will flood radio stations with a non-stop marathon of William Shatner singing.
"We think this will bring them to their knees," said one high-ranking official.

Yeah, I saw both programs, and I thought the Canadians won it hands down. Maybe they should have worn red, to make themselves more appealing to the judges... I even thought the Americans (who got 5th place) did the long program better than the Russians. More risk, more style, and I like Paganini (sp?). Canadians should have gotten the gold. I feel sorry for the skaters, even the Russian skaters.

That there; exactly the kinda diversion we coulda used.

Hey, judges...
The Canadian duo also got silver in Nagono. Last night, their routine was flawless, and the Russian pair screwed up a few times...
Now this is the pairs, which has a technical aspect to it. Ice dancing (no real compulseray or technical side) is were all the judge corruption is, and it seems that its starting to leak into other figure skating types. For ice dancing, they already have the scores, marks, and rankings. On the front page of the Toronto Star today it said that in the upcoming ice dancing event, Canadians will finish 5th (quite a difference, as we usually are 1st in this event and have been for quite a while), behind the Russians, the Lithuwanians (sp?), the Italians, and one other country (can't remember which). Doesn't this just p!ss you off?
The IOC should pull the plug on these judges. The new premier is trying to remove the corruption in the IOC (like the acceptence of bribes that made them choose Salt Lake). Maybe they'll also make better decisions and not political ones... *cough-Bejing-cough*

If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
The judges' decision on last night's figure skating was disgusting.
There is neither honor nor wisdom with any judge who voted for the Russians over the Canadians. This was such blatant corruption that I’m surprised they dared to try and pull it off (If you’re going to scam the world at least try to make it plausible). Canadians have a right to be p*ssed off. Most of the people who saw last night's figure skating (who aren't Russian
) are p*ssed at that ruling. I'm glad they're calling the judges on that.

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
