I had originally started off with a Half Orc fighter, Elven rogue, Human cleric, and Dwarven fighter. I tried to max out their key stats but I found as you progress through the game, many items give you the chance to boost your stats anyways. I multiclassed my elf as a sorcerer but now that I want to make him a cleric as well, I'll have to deal with a -20% XP penalty for choosing a non-preferred class of the elven race.

After a while, I dropped my cleric (she kept getting bad HP rolls) in exchange for Faeril (fighter/cleric NPC who joins your party). I also picked up Jarial (sorcerer) and Eadred (Paladin)

So, my party now consists of 2 fighters, 1 paladin, 1 fighter/cleric, 1 rogue/sorcerer, and 1 sorcerer. So far it has worked out pretty effectively (nothing quite like having your sorcerers get the best iniative rolls and drop 2 fireballs into a group of creatures before combat begins!)

I hope this helps!

slightly spoiling

Here's what I did... all characters should be Half-Elves for their spell resistances and lack of a preferred class. And now i'm gonna spoil you a bit don't make a Sorceror in your starting party because in the first level of the dungeons there is a lvl 3 Human Sorceror named Jarial, but to release him from the rock you need to be wearing a ring anf you need to click the rock not him. Also another word of advice, I think that Ranger and Barbarian are useless classes in this game. Here's the party I made:
Human - Monk (because Half-Elf Monks look ridiculous)
Half-Elf - Rogue
Half-Elf - Fighter
Half-Elf - Cleric(never go without one of these)
Hope that helps.

You can check out the NPCs section for PoR @ gamebashee to see what characters and classes are available and decide what to do when you create your own characters.

Here's something I forgot to mention in my previous post. When you choose your class figure out which stat(s) you're never going to need and crash them, setting them to the lowest possible so you can get the best starting stats possible, and if you're gonna wear anything heavier than ringmail, don't give Dex anything above +1.
