I believe that subscribing to a thread allows you to receive email notices when someone posts in that thread

Yeah, but I think he means what happens when you subscribe to a forum.

I'm subscribed to SYM, but the only difference I've noticed is the fact you can see who last posted in the forum when going to your "user cp".

Yep... Thats what happens.... It crashed me email the other day when I received 600+ emails in one sitting....

Well, I've got that option turned off in my profile, perhaps that is why this did not happen to me.

My conclusion, profile setting overrides subscribing, yes?

I'm actually suscribed to each indiviual thread I have posted in, thus receive notification everytime a new post is made. did you know SYM accumulates over 1500+ posts a day!

That's what I meant, doesn't that remind you of someone. And everything Sleep's done, you've pretty much done it all as well.
