Maximum??
Maximum??
has anyone actually maxed out their characters by going through the game once? i mean without exporting a high level character and starting from the beginning again. I only could get up to level 29 for a paladin!?!? and i completely killed all the quests...someone help!! what am i missing!!
How about resting 5000 times in the sewers under the Copper Coronet? Hobgoblins and Kobolds spawn there to interrupt your rest half the time.

Summon Pit Fiends and kill them with impunity while Protected from Evil... 16K a pop. You'd only have to kill, oh, 80 or so to level your party.

Isn't there a maximun amount of XP the NPCs can have when you summon them?
It may seem like I'm doing nothing, but on cellular level, I'm really quite busy...

Letting the game level up your NPCs might not be such a great idea... They get lousy Hit Point rolls and not-so-useful proficiencies.

Get a char at the beginning of BG2 and play thru BG2 with it. Then, when you are thru, start a new game with that same char (import from savegame)
And let the XP roll in again. Just that play this time that char thru the game in different manner. I.e. take other romances and so on.. And first time play thru the game without ToB, second time play thru the game with Tob as well.
Second time you can already take a smaller party or solo, since char is stronger and some additional bonuses from the SoA end, like immunity to +1 and lesser weapons sure is neat
Other then that, don't know. I did ALL the quests I could, with all the NPC's who joined me. Basically I took 1 NPC, did all his/her quests, then took another and so on. I started the char from BG1 (plus TofSC expansion) and got the char to lvl 29 in BG2. However, that's without the ToB yet. So with the ToB I could get it perhaps higher, but whether all the way to 40, not sure.

For an idea of how much exp. is available in ToB/WK, I took a pary of four from BGII with just over 3 million. They finished the expansion with over 6 million each. So playing solo, or just a dynamic duo of some sort, should get the PC pretty close to 8 million if not over.
Remember that while kill exp and some quests are awarded as lump sums divided amongst the party, some quests award a set amount to each character. So smaller parties will level up faster, but maybe not as fast as you'd like
