How fast can you whoop Jon?

Post by smaug chow »

I was attempting a "speed" run through BG2 when my hard drive gave up the ghost and I never reinstalled the game, so I never got to complete it. I was trying to finish the game in as little game time as possible without cheating. I cheesed quite a bit to arm my party (steal-sell-steal from black market merchants and steal-steal-steal from scroll merchants) but I avoided any real quests that were not essential to the story.

I think I wound up with

Me - Barbarian (for high HP)
Minsc
Jahiera
Viconia
Jan
Yoshi/Imoen

I had just hit the underdark, I think - in 9 days. Maybe I had just gotten to SPellhold - I don't remember.

Anyway, I'm curious about how fast the game can be completed in game time, not real time. Anybody have any speed records they'd like to share?

OK - I deserved it.

Feel like a fool - somebody else asked the question right before I did and I didn't notice.

Doh!

Uncle Qualye taught me well, I know that I can be a real contribution to this party....

actually have her equipped with boots of speed and the hammer of tbolts or crom, and see her whizzing by at high speed and holding this giant hammer after you feeble minded a dragon and poly morp into squirrel is pricceless!!!!

but really, I've heard the best way to do this is to have a nasty, evil fighter heavy party, korgy, vaygar, minsc, keldy and other s, and a thief....

the biggest obstical if you're going for short duration game time is mages resting to recast spells, the obstical if you want fast in real time is.....

how nasty do you want your sorc to be???!!!???

the pc in my game is always an uber sorc, with a large enough and evil enough battery of spells to take out firkragg in 10 second, my record....

the trick is the evil cheese spells of doom...instead of having fighters bash out, i run a mage heavy and multi class heavy cheese party....

think using feeble mind on blue circle enemies, you can caaast until one sticks and the enemy will not turn hostile, or a project image, time stop, increased acuity and enough abu dahzims to take firky down to 50 hp in one timestop....boy, was it surprised when it got wasted by power word kill!!!!

the sorc lends itslef to evil cheese tactics...
They call me Darth...

Darth Gizka!

I soloed the game with a berserker/thief in about eleven or twelve days, can't remember exactly. I think someone did it in 10 which is probably about minimum.
I think soloing is quicker cause you can stealth through some areas.

Actually the retarded one is probably me cause I buy a game and then skip out on most of the quests just to finish it as quickly as possible!! :D
Still it was a bit of fun.
The most impressive run through SoA was that someone(can't remember who) took a halfling swashbuckler through the game and making only about 50 kills.

LOL my fastest time though was 30 days, and my longest time was about 600 days in an pure mage party, every single character in my 6 peoples party were eighter uber sorccer, or regular ol mage, all i can say is well seeing all 6 do ing a chain conguigtry then chain 3 horrid wiltering in it, well most enemy are fried before they even know i'm there :) if that fails then i just do a chain conguigy and do project image trick and just hammer them to the ground out of sheer number of magic missiles
bah bah, sig? Me? naaa.

I don't think it's possible to go much faster than 25 days (unmodified BG2, no cheating, some cheese). Soloing, I once did it in 27, but I "lingered" in Akthala for almost three days before getting on the boat. I even rested once!

The theoretical minimum is some 9 day 18 hour.

I wonder how this challenge can be extended to ToB...

Thanks for posting that link, Kovi - I knew the thread existed but I had never read it.

As far as TOB goes, I think a lot of people have said that it's pretty hard to solo at all, so a "speed solo" would certainly be a fun challenge, as it cuts down on trap laying. A solo character that doesn't rest much in TOB gets new abilities almost as fast as they can use them up, though.

There is no big 7 day boat trip in TOB either; there is a fair amount of hiking around. I would imagine 5-7 days? No watcher's keep, i suppose.

I think the spirit of speed soloing expressed in the thread is actually more interesting and "true" than taking forever to complete the game. I think I'll try it.
May you walk on warrrrm sannd....

You can't do it in 12 days. If I remember right, you spend longer than that on the boat to Spellhold!

Actually, maybe I'm counting the boat journey in both directions; if you go from Spellhold directly to the Underark, then yes, you can do it much faster.
