Why did Tolkein write his books?

I'm not Welsh! (though I always wanted to be) While you may fall outside the norm in stature for most Welshpersons, you can't deny that your nose is large and pendulous like a Proboscus Monkey! (At least that's what Waverly once told me...)Originally posted by Mr Sleep:

On the defensive tonight are you Gwally, something you are trying to hide from us perhaps? Something you don't want the ladies to find out about.....is it possibly your small stature that has you spooked?Originally posted by Gwalchmai:

On a serious note: As I recall from a linguistics class I took once, there were only 50 or so native speakers of Welsh remaining back in 1950.

It wouldn't surprise me, there is a large amount of differentiating dialect between North and South Wales. What one is taught in schools and colleges differ's greatly from what is spoken by the average natural Welsh speaker. I have known it to happen that a Northwalien will be having a conversation with a Southwalien and they can not understand a word the other said
There has also been a lot of cross-fertilisation (for lack of a better word) with England, this might have affected the change to some degree in natural Welsh

England is not Britain!! (Americans dont seem to clear on this point VIV)
England is a new country in Britain compartively speaking. Made of of mostly Germanic tribes, even normans had germanic origins
<STRONG>I guess people who have responded to me on this topic DONT read me properly. And after getting this bit of info it proves a point.
It seems as though 'as I suspected' that tolkein did not like the fact that English mythology did not exist. He perceived a weakness in the English culture as other countries in Britain have. Though it is a very good rational culture.
"
His heart told him to create what was most important to him: a ‘new mythology’ for England. Tolkien’s deep love for the language, the people, the land, and all things English, would inspire his work. He perceived there was a vacuum in the history of England, that there were no myths the land could call her own. Here he explains his conviction in that famously long letter to Milton Waldman (No. 131):
I was from early days grieved by the poverty of my own beloved country: it had no stories of its own (bound up with its tongue and soil), not of the quality that I had sought, and found (as an ingredient) in legends of other lands.... I had a mind to make a body of more or less connected legend, .... which I could dedicate simply to: to England; to my country
"

As for Yshania's arguments I dont understand you (except for maybe history naive Americans) .
England is a great rational minded country which has done many good things but it does appear English ego's are hurt by its history.
English mythology is not very vast and its history of a country is relatively short . I cant help these facts. People want to believe the culture is complete in every respect.
You seem to have a thing with King Arthur. What is your point that he was English? English culture is rich in mythology? Britain is really England?
Would you like to explain yourself clearly on these points.
Hi y'all
Just a small question for intersts sake, how much do you actually know about English heritage and history?Originally posted by at99:

Also what basis does this have with Tolkein, writers get there inspiration from many different sources, as we were not there when he wrote it and none of us can ask him directly what prompted his novels; we can only speculate through works written by others and letters by him, which are all centered around interpretation.

@at99 HAve you read his essay on fairy tales. It explains what he said in the quote you're so fond off.
The "of the quality" bit is a lot more important then the "none" bit.

Thus far your posts demonstrate nothing other than a fixation with England's apparent lack of a history, rather than any real attempt, desire, or ability to entertain rational discussion.

Everyone please maintain respect for each others opinions. Since Tolkein is not available to answer any questions, everything is speculation and personal interpretation.

I have stated my points and being argumentitive does no mean I want to be ofensive.
Look at it from my point of view. A lot of responses seem fixed on the idea that Britain and England are the same . I could not convinve people that the 2 are different. How would Americans like if we said Canadians and Mexicans are exactly the same as Americans? Would you argue back?
This was a major sticking point with people and people were convinced otherewise making their argument ..HUH?.
Tolkein saw shotcomings in his own culture and I (and many other people outside England) see the same , why is it offensive?
I have some of my own history from England.
It just seems the argument is more ego than anything else (prove me wrong with facts)
My own country Australia has many culture faults (from opinions from abroad), so be it!
We are not perfect.
