I took my son to see the movie without the benefit of having read the book. I thought it was fairly well done, although I think that the writers assumed the audience had read the books first. For instance, when the kids were assigned to a house upon arriving at Hogwarts, the audience is given no clear explanation about the significance of each house and why one may more desirable than another (ie-Why doesn't Harry want to be assigned to Slytherin?).
The boy enjoyed the movie as well, although he thought that too many things were left out. I told him that's part of turning a book into a movie and that if they included everything, it would have been six hours long. As it was, the 2:45 passed fairly quickly, and I thought if anything that they tried to put too much into the film. All in all, though, it was very good.

Well, now that I've seen the movie and also have it(on divx
), I'd like to report my opinion.
Pro's:
1.A truly great cast, except for the title role
.
2.except for the big mosters (fluffy and the Troll) I myself(as someone who pays great attention to behind the scenes) could barely tell the special effects apart from the real things.
3.The Quiditch(SP) game realy succeded as a movie climax -unlike the pod racing in Phantom Menace, which looked extriemly fake and wasn't all that interesting.
4.Even though I am very biased toward him - again John William creates a good and efective score (especialy during the chess game).
Cons:
1.Not good casting decision for the main role. Daniel Radcliff (Harry Potter) is over shadowed by every one near him.
2.rushing through the first part of the book, leaving out some potentialy good scenes.
3.changing the story,(albite slightly) like with the dragon.
4.To contradict the pro- The music sounds almost identical to the music of Home Alone. Though,it is understandible(SP) considering that the movies are both essentialy kids movies, starring kids and are directed and composed by the same people (Chris Columbus and Williams)
5.Plot hole:Snape (played Briliantly(SP) by Alan Rickman)does not appear enough in the movie, and when he does, he is not sinister enough to fit his role as in the book.
In the end this a good movie, catapulted into greatness by an extraordinary cast, Definetly worth a night out
.
Now on to "Lord of the Rings" which I'm getting next week on Divx.
