There is a cage at the City Zoo that contains both peac0cks and wild pigs. If there are a total of 30 eyes and 44 feet, how many of each are in the cage?

An old beggar collects cigarette ends from ashtrays and pavements and uses the tobacco to roll her own cigarettes. She has this practice down to a fine art, knowing that seven cigarette ends will make one rolled cigarette. Since she has collected 49 ends, how many cigarettes can she make from these?

I'm off to bed now (10pm local) but I just couldnt resist Ysh's "charm,"

,este, challenge.

x= #of pigs
y= # of pea****s

44=4x + 2y (pigs have 4 legs while birds have 2legs)

there are 30 eyes, therefore 15 pairs;

15=x + y

44 = 4x + 2y
-15 = x + y

MPE

2[15=x+y]

so

30= 2x + 2y

then we can remove y

44 = 4x + 2y
-30 = 2x + 2y
--------------
14 = 2x

so
x = 7, the # of pigs which makes y = 8, the # of pea****s

getting sleepy now...

@CE - I like your approach - direct, to the point and again correct

The beggar can make an 8th cigarette from the stubs of the first seven she had already made
