Re: Blood Donations for Victims of Tragedy

Post by scully1 »

According to the RI Blood Center, it is NOT good for everyone to jam the blood drives in one fell swoop. Due to the short shelf-life of many transfusion products, they cannot preserve so great a quantity of blood; and at some point the donated blood will become worthless. And the thousands who donate all in two or three days won't ba able to donate agian for another 8 weeks.

What they want, rather, is for people to stagger their donations. So that there's a more steady stream of donations every day. Not thousands in one blow. SO it may be best to wait some days, or even a week or more.

Also don't forget, there is going to be a strain on the local blood supplies because of this. So they are going to need donations for a long time yet.

Remember too that there are others who need blood year-round, without the benefit of a CNN reporter rallying assistance for them. So please consider becoming a regular donor :)

Just thought I'd share that, for those who might be thinking about donating :)

They will take all types of blood. O might be universal but not everyone has O. They need all types.
