Merger

Post by Nippy »

I have just found out that Hewlett Packard and Compaq are going to merge for $87 billion dollars. Does anyone think this will create a veritable 'stranglehold' on the PC market?

Don't know, I just wanted to say that together they still aren't as big as IBM.

BTW, didn't HP overtake Compaq? Not just a merg?

HP have bought Compaq yes, and it was as a counterweight to IBM.

And no - I don't think this will change much seeing as IMO both HP and Compaq have the same clientel(market-segmentation(sp?)) as IBM.

You have to admit though, $87 billion is a lot to spend on one company to try to fight off another...

Acording to cnn.dk it is "only" $25 billion and is apprently to be paid in stocks.
And together this new company can only just compete with IBM

HP + Compaq has have a joint income of 87 (47+40) billion and IBM have had income of about 90 billion. (in the last 12 months)

And it is not a lot if it will ensure the company(ies) survival on the market - it would be worse for consumers to be with out these 2 companies in lenght, than with this take-over.
But I don't own any HP/Compaq and/or IBM stuff (well I have a HP calculater) so I
don't really have a personal feeling about it
(and I don't plan on buying any from then anyway)

the merger/takeover was more in response to Dell than to IBM. compaq and HP had most of their revenue decreases come from lack of personal computer sales, which Dell and gateway just whooped up on everyone else

I'm not sure how that will effect that market. I've had to send back every compaq I've ever gotten, except for my laptop(and even that had to be sent in for repairs earlier this year). My desktop PC is a Pionex, which I think is made by IBM, but I'm not sure. The other two computers in my house are a Gateway(great computer, if not a bit costly) and a Packard Bell(a good computer, especially since we only paid about $550 for it). I'm quite happy with my Pionex, especially since I just upgraded to 190+ MB RAM and added a DVD-ROM drive as well as a new Optical Wheel Mouse. :D heehee, me went shopping today. :D
